ABS Help

Ok i have read alot of threads on here about the abs problems on the Rodeos but havent really been able to solve or go toward the right direction with mine. I have the dredded 98 and the abs codes i retrieved are 15,22,35,41,42,43,44,45 and 53 according to the flashing abs light while pins 4 and 12 are jumped. I have checked the resistance on the rear sensor and it checked out ok, also checked the connectors there also for corrosion, ok also. Disconnecting the battery does not help it sets off the light automatically and checking the fuses they are good also. I dont believe this vehicle has been in for the abs recall being i just purchased it from my brother but not sure if that would even be the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How are you counting the flashes?

The long count starts the number followed by short counts, they all add up. ie light on, pause, light flash, light flash = 3.

Also when checking make sure the emerency brake is not on and notice if this light flashes also.

When you short thoughs two together, I believe you are shorting the diagnostic to the 4 wd drive light, I wonder if your causing some of these errors yourself. You should just ground the orange wire.

That will get you going. The codes I have range from 2 to 15.

15 = High or Low Ignition Voltage
22 = Brake Switch Failure
35 = Open or Shorted Relay Circuit
41 = FL Open or isolation solenoid or shorted ECU output OR
FL Shorted isolation solenoid or open ECU output
42 = FL Open dump solenoid or shorted ECU output OR
FL Shorted dump solenoid or open ECU output
43 = FR Open isolation solenoid or shorted ECU output OR
FR Shorted isolation solenoid or open ECU output
44 = FR Open dump solenoid or shorted ECU output OR
FR Shorted dump solenoid or open ECU output
45 = Rear Open isolation solenoid or shorted ECU output OR
Rear Shorted isolation solenoid or open ECU output
53 = Rear Open or shorted sensor

I think it unlikely that all these things could be simultaneously defective so I suspect the ABS module itself is hosed, OR you have one or more bad connections, OR your ignition voltage is the root cause of everything else.

The voltage is the easiest thing to check so start there. If that isn't it, then pursue the recall thing. Sometimes the dealer just reflashes the EEPROM in the module and sometimes they replace the whole module.

You may have to fight the dealer to get the recall done. I've read that others have had this experience.

If you want to check out the wiring, post your e-mail address and I will send you a wiring diagram.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

Ok went back outside, had the battery on the charger most of the day and decided to go for a ride. After disconnecting everything when i started it up i had no ABS light. So i drove it around the neighborhood for a good 15- 20 mins no light at all. Came home for a bit and thought i would try it again. Again no ABS light, but while driving i hit a pretty good pot hole and then the
ABS light came on. I came home shut off the engine waited a min and then restarted it no ABS light. Maybe a bad sensor heh

Well if it is a sensor, I'd bet on the rear one. Could also be a wiring thing. There are three connectors between this sensor and the module. The first is right at the sensor on top of the differential. The next is along the left side rail in the vicinity of the axle as I recall. The third is under the truck approximately under the driver's seat. Any of these could give you a 'bad sensor' code.

First thing is to check the sensor itself. Stick an ohmeter on it it; should read 1.0-1.7 kOhm. If that checks out, start looking for a wiring problem.

Good Luck!

Yeah the sensor checked out ok and i looked at the 2 connectors at the rear but did not check near the seat. Will check out in the morning thanks.
