Truck won't start when security light is on

I have a 1996 S10. I have searched around through various sights and still can't find a specific answer to the problem. The truck was involved in an accident on the front drivers side a few months ago and was driven for a for about 8 weeks before any problems occured. The truck runs fine once started but sometimes it will not start. I have noticed that the security light comes on and have reason to believe that this might be the source of the problem. Does anyone know more about the security light that comes on and how this can be fixed. Thank you in advance.

Sounds like your key is going bad. Well, pending your key has the electric chip imbedded in it. (It's black, you can't miss it). The chip is either dirty or the key is bad. They are not too expensive to reaplce.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunatly we thought the same thing but the key isn't one with the electric chip imbedded in it.

Not quite sure what anti -theft system you have. Passlock technology didn't start on the S-10 until 1998. If you have VATS, then you could buy a VATS bypass kit 652T from Directed as a possibility. If your key doesn't have a chip, then maybe your VATS was already bypassed by a previous owner. The resistor could be failing. Just some thoughts. Check out this discussion on the Malibu forum.

also wondering what the "factory" security system is, my '98/2.2LS 2wd has it, but no chip in key. when i first bought the truck, stalled it a couple times getting used to the clutch, and it came on once. manual says it needs to be serviced at the dealership if light doesn't go off after vehicle sitting an hour or two.....sounds kinda weird to me...lol

Yeah, you have Passlock 2. It would be a good idea to read up on some other posts just to know how to reset the alarm in case you are stranded in a parking lot with a no start condition. If your light is flashing and your truck won't start--- Take out your key and wait 3 mins. then try again. If that doesn't work, it will take a full blown reset---turn your key to on and wait 10 mins until the light stops flashing. It should start up. If this starts happening more and more often, you are probably in for an Ignition Lock Cylinder replacement. The Passlock sensors are built into the cylinder, if the sensors go bad you have to replace the whole thing. There is a pretty good discussion at this link:
