I have to say, "meh", because I worked at a 9-1-1 dispatch center, and we got a call from a cat once even though no one was home. Nice that the guy was helped out though.

well, having a companion that loves you, even if you hit it and treat it bad, lowers your blood pressure somehow.

It's known science that having a (reasonable) pet cat or dog (easiest to care for, most responsive), lessens stress, and reduces blood pressure.

This is why there are programs in the US where clean, friendly animals are taken to retirement homes and hospitals that house/care for sick and dying kids.
