Car Alarm Ideas... Looking for Input

I just bought an '02 Wrangler with a lot of work done to it. I pretty much liquidated all my assets for this machine... So you can imagine how POed I was when I saw a guy sitting in the driver's seat last night. I've only had the car for 3 days!!
Anyways, I've been researching car alarms to get an idea of what might work best for a wrangler. From everything I've read in AutomotiveForums it seems like anything with a proximity sensor would be fine. So I've been looking at the Viper 791XV and the 508D prox. sensor. I'd like to put all the wiring in braided steel to prevent tampering (I've always done this). I want to do something different with my Wrangler since these are so prone to theft... I'm thinking about getting a bunch of "super bright" LED strobes and putting them in places that a theif would be looking when the alarm goes off. I was also reading about a siren the Viper makes with the purpose of being painful. I also have a club, a foot pedal lock, two different kill switches, and a hood lock. ...Good thing the previous owner was paranoid, too!

A sawed off shotgun attached to a trip wire should work wonders!! :owned: I hope I never see someone sitting in my Jeep!

When we bought my wifes 99 TJ it already had a Hornet alarm installed. Hornet is made by DEI, the same as Viper. Its got a proximity sensor, shock sensor and ignition kill and warn away with two stage siren. The original install was really sloppy and it has caused us some problems. Ive pretty much replaced the whole system in the last 5 years. The "brain" went first so I installed a new one, we went through two proximity sensors because they were mounted in a vulnerable location and I recently had to replace the siren because of water damage. I replaced the siren with a better model and mounted it better and moved the proximity sensor from the floor to under the lid of the center console (actually sandwiched inside the console lid). The proximity sensor is a bear to keep adjusted because of the soft top and soft windows, top up, top down, full doors, half doors, all of these things seem to effect it.

I'm starting to wish I had just bought an older Jeep that I wouldn't worry about as much... Thanks for the input.

I know what you mean. That new car smell is nice, but its just as nice to have a beater.
Alarms do provide some insurance but its really very limited. They arent going to keep the "professional" car thieves from taking your baby and they arent going to stop the punk kids from ruining your top, tires, paint, etc. and theyre not going to stop the local crack head from quickly snatching CDs out of your center console.
I remember when I was growing up, my dad had a new ford pickup. He worked in a bad part of town and had to park at a specific parking lot. His truck got broke into twice and the windows knocked out. His solution was to not lock the doors and not keep anything of value inside. After that, his windows never got broken again. He came back to find his glove box open a couple times, but no damage. Thats now my solution. A locked door or alarm only keeps honest people out and the punk kids are going to tear your stuff up no matter what you do.

I'm able to park my car right outside of my apartment window, so I think a paging alarm should work alright. I'm pretty sure the Pro's don't steal from my on campus apartment complex very often because of the risk... people are always awake, and the cops drive by about every 30 min. ...I just worry about drunken college students, and students that grew up on the East side of Detroit (not to make generalizations). I just can't believe that somebody just opened the door and sat in my Jeep!! Anybody ever heard of the flame thrower security system? mmm mmm... Fried ass hole!

Flame thrower would rock!!!

All joking aside - one of my old friends that installs car stereos said they make a car alarm that shocks anyone that touches the vehicle along with a audible alarm I don't talk to him anymore he moved away so I cant verify this but it would be worth checking into. I know if I was going to get into someones car and got zapped I wouldn't try it again. Ever touched an electrical fence????

Ha! That's hilarious. I've thought about putting a couple capacitors in parallel, and attaching them to a switch that closes the circuit when somebody starts to open the door handle... This would give a theif a quick jolt much like a stun gun. This would recharge quick and not drain the battery at all (unless somebody trys to open the door repeatedly... which I would pay to watch!) There are two problems though... First, this could potentially kill someone. And Second, this would probobly just piss off a theif so they'd smash out the windsheild before running off!

I know I'm going to do something crazy with this security system... just because I'm so paranoid right now. I've seen a couple alarms that take a couple pictures of the theif when the alarm goes off. So... shock his ass, take a picture, and then spray a cloud of Mace... Now we're talking. This thread is rediculous, but who knows... maybe I'll come up with something that works!

Actually, I just thought of something... What about putting a life-like stuffed pitt bull that looks like it's sleeping in the passenger seat?! Ha problem solved.

Fusion, best place for a kill switch would be under dash where you have to wrap your hand all the way around back, or under the driver's seat. Those two locations seem to be the best and most efficient from what I have installed before, a lot of people frequently ask for those two. Another good one is to diguise it as a button/switch in your dash instruments. Pretty much however it will fool thieves, do it.

Don't forget to get a club and a foot pedal lock. If you have both of those (maybe an alarm too... but that's going to cost atleast a couple hundred for something useful) a theif will atleast think twice... You may even catch them in the 30 sec. it takes them to take that stuff off (especially with a paging alarm). I've been thinking about setting mine up to be a silent alarm that pages me so I can just out there with my 9mm. ...It's legal to shoot to kill if somebody is tresspassing!

Fusion, basically what you do with the switch is interrupt the hot wire going to the ignition. Find that constantly hot wire, snip it, wire the switch in, and voila!:iceslolan you have to flip the switch to get power to the ignition. Instant kill switch. Any other questions let me know.
