when i purchased my '99 elantra i had to get it re-smogged since it was 90-days since it had be smogged by the previous owner (was smogged in july '05, what a bummer!) and i went to one place where they guy said he could not connect to the vehicle's computer system after 4 attempts and called it quits. he said it was a common problem with hyundais and referred me to a guy down the street to see if he couldn't connect to perform the smog test.

so this other guy tries once and no luck. then he says he's got another machine he can try and somehow manages to connect to the computer system finally and i passed the test.

has anyone here heard of this type of problem before?

The same thing happened to me. I took my 99 Elantra to a local garage and they told me the connector was faulty and it would still be under warranty so go back to the dealer to get it replaced. I promtly made an appointment with my dealer complaining the connector did not work and it had to be replaced. I was surprised to find out they had no problems connecting?????. I did not want to spend a fortune there and I try to do all my own work so I purchased an OBII scan tool to diagnose my own problems and it would not connect for me either??
I then called the Technical Service people and was told to check the fuses(usually #10 I think it was). After many attemps I found that if you push hard and sort of twist the connections at the same time it will connect. It took 3 of us to pass the state inspection tests. I think the pins are shorter in the Hyundai?? I can't wait to do that again.
