well i've been a bit bored chillin at home, though i've got some anime i could watch.

i got this for my brother as a gift a while back and its been sittin here collecting dust. I hit up google and searched for a forum of model builders, to get some help.

This place is great, after starting this project and reading numerous How-To's, FAQS, other WIP's, finished products, i'm seriously interested in persuing more builds.

This again is my first build and i'm learning alot while i go. The FAQS have been a huge help and i wanna say thanks to all those who've contributed.

Its a FUJIMI model, and the body kit is made of aluminum/body is plastic. I had to remove the side skirts and rear bumper if i wanted to use the veilside kit. Fitment wasn't too big of an issue, i was careful removing the plastic parts.

I masked the area just in case the dremmel slipped a tad, and hacked off the bits. I then used a finger nail file to sand down for an exact fit. Took it out to the garage and got a few coats of primer on it.

When that was done, i used modeling spot filler to clean up the itty bitty spaces. Had to wait for it to dry before sanding and a getting another coat of primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0599.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0601.jpg

I wet sanded it going from course to fine, getting the imperfections out, along with smoothing out the body filler. Then applied a bit more spot filler for final touch ups.

I put this away to dry and attacked the underbody and interior pieces. I cut out every last piece and hot glued them to wooden chopsticks so i could spray them down with primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0573.jpg

decided to go with a satin black for the interior and some red for accent bits. The undercarrage, dash, center console were finished first

and 1 disk, cause i wanted to see what it would look like

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0596.jpg

I plan on painting it Arctic Blue Metallic, and have already applied 4coats of "Pure White" paint so the blue wouldn't be so dark.

I personally wanna thank GTI1800 for the "How-to: Make Wide Brimmed Wheels" I added a bit something so the rim had a nice slant into the lip.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0694.jpg

Took a strip of stryene and sanded down the edge on one side. So it kinda looked like this < , then got a straight edge and cut the slant off the strip. After attaching the lip to the wheel, i then glued in these slants to have a nice gradual slope, instead of a harsh edge.

This alone took me half a day  i plan on priming and painting them tomorrow.

I'm also going to apply the first coat of Blue tomorrow and am lookin forward to it.

Thanks for looking, any comments and/or suggestions are more than welcome

Thanks for the compliment

well it ain't easy lemme tell you. I've scrapped several bits, having to start over a couple times. I mean GTI's writeup makes it look easy, but man, its fairly tough for a n00b like myself

Well heres a small update. While making the deep dished wheels, i had to dump my seats in a sealable container of brake fluid (thank you AF). The masking didn't stick right, so black was all over the red accent inserts of the seats.

Anyewho, i sprayed the body with about 4coats of white and wet sanded it the other day. Yesterday i was able to spray my first coat of Arctic Blue Metallic. This shits a bit tricky spraying with my Iwata Eclipse. You need to spray at something else every once in a while to keep it from globbing up and shooting boogers at the car.

Anywho on with the pics

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0699.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0696.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0697.jpg

today i was able to finish the 5th coat of Blue. Still gonna put about 2more and then i'll be happy with clearing it. Also wanna thank AF for a paint tip when using Metallic paints.

I also put the interior together yesterday

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0701.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0700.jpg

i'm somewhat happy with the interior, though this being my first build, i wish it was less shiney. After seeing other interiors, i wish i knew how to get it to look like leather rather than vinyl.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0703.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/nvusgt/DSCN0702.jpg

When the paint was stripped of the seats i thought it would be a good time to fill in the backs (also thanks to AF). I cut out some styrene in the shape of the seat back and glued it in place. I got another piece of styrene a bit bigger than the first and glued it to the first and the edges of the seat. Cut off the excess and then sanded the rest, kinda creating a slight curve light some real seats.

I guess that about it, thanks for looking and any comments are more than welcome.

Wow, what a deep color! I also have to wonder about those headlights, too.

Any suggestions on how to PROPERLY mask seats? I might have trouble with that myself!

01-04-2006, 10:39 PM
thanks alot guys for the comments.

yah the car's pretty heavy, i couldn't believe the body kit was made of metal, took a while to keep the kit attached to the body.

The headlights are stationary (unlike alot of the kits here i've seen) so i had primed the whole thing and sprayed them black. Then i had masked the headlight lenses and popped them in.

*fingers crossed* i'm really hoping it turns out ok  or it could prove to be one UBER n00b move

Wow looking good. I have a Veilside 300ZX that I need to do but every body kit peace is to short so I need to fix that then I can mold it to the car... friggin people cant get anything right.

nvusgt
01-05-2006, 05:27 PM
lol, i had that problem and thought WTF, not only is the kit metal, almost impossible to smooth out and work with, but its also too short.

I simply sanded down the wheel arches like a noob, later reading here i coulda used styrene to fill in the differance instead.

Very Impressive, a Fujimi Kit with a body kit is a Challengeing kit for most people, but you seem to have done your research and have the talent to take your time to build this kit well.
Well done, don't rush and enjoy the build. It looks awsome!

I am new to this hobby too. As for the interior being too shiney, ever think of using some dullcote to spray on top of it? I did this to my messed up interior and I was able to recover it decently. I use this trick all the time when I mess up with my brush painting (when the shine is different on different spots). This saves me some time in stripping paint.

01-17-2006, 03:25 PM
thanks alot for the compliments guys. I'm in the air about spraying flat clear over the interior, but seeing as its already glued together, i may just pass on it.

After messing up the front seats and dumping them in brake fluid, i decided to simply paint them red. Masking with crappy/ghetto tape is uber frustrating, so i just sprayed them one color. I hope it won't look wierd once put together.

oh oh, i'm thinking real hard about cutting out the driver side window. I think it just looks odd if you can't see into the car clearly. Maybe even the "roll down" mod on the passenger side ;)

Well heres a tiney update :tisk: i'm so pressed for time its not even funny. I've yet to even paint the mirrors, the friggin wing, intercooler, and maybe 1 or 2 other things. I spent the whole day wet sanding the fucker. Talk about a pain! Ya i caught my fuck up before i got to the primer. So now i gotta touch it up :tisk: i'm a tad pissed.

SO, i tried painting a base coat on the wheels, to prep them for Chrome paint. Being the first time i've used lacquer paint in my airbrush its difficult. When the paint hit the wheels, it looked like cobwebs, all stringy and fucked up. How do i prevent this? What am i doing wrong?

Well if the brake bath doesn't clean them up, then i'm gonna scrap'm and go with the Volk TE37's that came with my Top Secret Skyline. Which i still have to modify to fit a set of aluminum wheel wells, i got to give them the "deep dish" look.

I did the window mod :), i thought it looked too foggy/wierd peeking into the cabin. I'm keeping the driver side out, but like in the pics the passenger side is half down :woot:

oh and don't mind all the white shit, its the crap built up from wet sanding. I hadn't yet cleaned it and used polishing compound. I'm hoping the finished look will be uber badass!!

Being as i'm leaving for basic soon, damn i just want this thing done, well gimme some feedback y0

uh, its model master enamel top coat, High Gloss Clearcoat, in a 3oz rattle can from my lhs. :dunno: i haven't been able to locate any tamiya stuff so i'm a bit limitted i guess.

well i could try to order some online but that takes too much time

oh and about the lacquer paint, any idea on how to keep it from "webbin up?" I mean it got pretty bad, like its been sitting collecting dust for ages.

incompatible paint will cause the webbing, like say lacquer over enamel.

shit, that means my primer is enamel or acryl, damnit.

Well what i'm trying to use is Alclad Chrome and thats a lacquer. I read someone useing 2 dif paints and effed the chrome finish.

How do i get the best results for some chrome wheels, using Alclad Chrome?

Looking good :-)

The paint "webbing" sounds like the laquer wasn't thinned enough, try thinning it more with laquer thinner and test it on something else first.
Make sure you have a good coat of primer on the parts first though so the laquer doesn't destroy the plastic.

um dont listen to him, he knows nothing j/k. Do not thin Alclad, its pre-thinned for airbrush. You need some Lacquer semi-gloss or gloss black. if you cant get hobby stuff like Tamiya go get some automitive paint from Wal-mart or Pep-boys or something.

Note that he said

SO, i tried painting a base coat on the wheels, to prep them for Chrome paint.

There was no mention of it being Alclad basecoat, leading me to beleive it was probably regular automotive laquer.

And if it is automotive laquer then the webbing thing fits too,
I remember having the same thing happen when incorrectly under-thinning paint in the early days as an apprentice spraypainter......
it also taught me to ALWAYS test my spraying on something other than the car i was working on first...:p

Having said all that I'd also reccomend using the Alclad black base instead, much less stuffing around.

Regards, Dan

wow thanks alot guys.

see heres what doesn't make sence, its Model Masters Lacquer Gloss Black. I sprayed my intercooler first (cause i'm gonna use the Alclad chrome on it as well) and it seemed fine, nothing webbed/globbed or anything.

Then i move to my friggin first set of scratchbuilt deep dish nismo's and they webbed like noones business . I stopped immediately and set them aside, thinking what just happened.

I was thinkin its thinned enough, cause the Alclads also a lacquer and it seems just as runny. I guess not huh, so i'll def be thinning that crap out and trying it on something first.........again lol

Oh i just got some turtle wax polishing compound and spend all day rubbing this damn thing. Its shinny, but just not as shinny as i thought it would and well there seems to be small tiney swirls wherever i rub (perhaps the crappy stuff i'm using). How do i get it shinnier (whats recommended) and how do i prevent these little swirls?

You guys have been a great help, thanks a ton for the support and compliments. Hope to have it done in the next couple days ;)
