CV joint

How difficult is it put in CV axles in a 1990 chevy lumina with a 3.1.....im a poor college student, with fairly good mechanic skills......one of my concerns is like so many projects, when you get into it something else is rusty and breaks off.....what are some trouble i will run into, and what is the estimated time of the project.

What you have to do is pull the suspension out to get to the drive axles. That involves removing the tire(obviously), the brake rotor and caliper, and then the strut tower assembly. Then, the drive axle and cv joint should pull directly out of the transmission. best way to do this would prbly be to pry them out as to not destroy the cv boot and create a mess. but, this may not matter in your case anyways. and, i would advise buying new seals for the transmission (cost of only a few bucks, i dont see why youd gamble on that...) you dont have to remove the struts or brakes, all you need to do is pop the tie rod end loose, and the ball joint, hold out on the assembly as you tap the axle end back thru the splines, swing strut assembly toward front of car a little, pop axle from tranny, and reverse to install.

true, but the removal of a mere 3 bolts, in my opinion, is worth it to have the freedom of a little more working space...

Not to say you are worng or i am right, i totally agree with "to each his own" i just never found it necessary, the strut and hub/brake will swing forward enough, and if you tie it forward, the axle will go straight in, in fact i am doing this today, that is after i take back and get the right axle that the auto parts store idoit double checked for me to make sure it was the right one ! I swear, i can see screwing up, but when you read a number on the computer, how much smarts does it take to look on the shelf and see if box has same number... yeah, it was Advance Auto... again.....
