Camera sucks. Not sure if the tape is jacked up or if the camera was hating life.
Sound is fine though.
http://home.comcast.net/~mrluos/firststart.wmv
Doesn't idle at 950 RPM's too well yet. Probably gonna have to bump that up.
The camera sound doesn't pick up the actual sound very well. It sounded much better in person. Although even that will change once it gets a good tune on it.
No leaks.
Oil pressure was up around 60 PSI at 1400 RPM's.

Still lots of work to be done.
But it is mostly downhill from here.
Sounds good....I will try to get a better sound clip later this week. One that doesn't echo in the garage.

HPTuners.
Although I am brand new to tuning...so I have a lot of reading to do before I try it.
Top speed....probably won't ever see anything more than what it traps in the 1/4. Top speed is exciting, but not worth it to me.
Probably won't ever see more than 125 MPH or so....that is about what it should trap at sea level in the 1/4.

the idle sounds pretty okay to me at 950rpm. luos why did you swap out the engine instead of going with a power adder like a turbo? me and nissanfanatic was talkin about turbos and high altitude and it doesn't effect turbos.
keymaster4225
01-04-2006, 06:05 PM
How does high altitude not affect turbos? The air is much less dense, and therefore not as easy to compress. They affect us just like n/a cars.
TatII
01-04-2006, 07:40 PM
that was my original arguement too but nissanfanatic told me that the wastegate from a turbo only sees pressure. so if air is less dense up high, the turbo will just need to spool alittle more then it will make the same pressure required to crack open the wastegate.
if the wastegate has a 14 psi spring, it will open a 14 psi no matter what. so the manifold will see 14 psi. true the turbo would have to spin alittle faster to make the same boost, but the difference would only be like .5 -1 psi tops becasue your not loosing like 1 whole atmosphere when your up high.
now if you argue with blowers, well blowers are effected more then turbos because they have a set drive ratio. the blower would not know if it has to spin faster or not becasue its set to spin that speed when a turbo is effected by boost pressure in the manifold.

TatII....no boost. At least for now. The plan is to get a good raise, and toss a charger on it.
I like the idea of having a completely forged motor just waiting for more.
I went with the N/A motor for now looking towards the future with the car. Hell...couple little suspension mods, a rear-end, and slicks and this car should be able to see 10's.
Imagine this thing with lower compression and 13-14 PSI from a supercharger!!!

Tat, not to onctradict but from my understanding Wastegates seince pressure differences, as to BOV's. When the pressure difference reaches 14PSI it will open. your boost guage also sences presure differences. So in you are still "boosting" 14PSI.
Example
Ambient Pressure is 0.8 ATM, your run 1ATM of boost. at sea level you are going to get the same performance as 0.8ATM of boost.
However, if the engine can handle a whole 1ATM of boost at sea level, when ambient air presure is 0.8ATM you can run 1.2ATM of boost. :)
that is my understanding but i may be wrong.
Superchargers, on the other hand, you have to swich out pulleys to make up for the lost air and when travleing down to more dence air you have to swap to a larger pulley.
once agian that is my understanding but i could be wrong.
either way, up high, bossted is better.

if you have a mechanical boost gauge, the guage reading would be slightly off when you reach up higher in the mountains.
however you did bring up a interesting argument about including absolute pressure which is guage pressure + ambient pressure. i'm pretty sure a 14 psi wastegate spring is calibrated to open at 14 psi absolute pressure which is 28.7 psi

Yeah, that would make sense.
Either way, boost is better for high altitude because the wastegate is adjustable. However, my understanding is that at high altitude, boost lag would be for quite a bit longer.

oops let me make a small correction. absolute pressure = guage pressure + boost pressure.
and yes even if the turbo did get alittle laggier, lag does not effect peak power unless its so ridiculously laggy that it can't make full boost, but i highly doubt that would be the case if your up in the mountains.

Indeed. However, it would put the useable powerband out of whack and you'd end up with a car that still has high power, but not much of it being useable (unless you're racing at 4-5000rpm of course) and hence you'd have a much less driveable car.

well it depends on what you consider to be less drivable. i know a wrx is pretty laggy stock, and i know that my car only has 3500rpms of good power. but i'm prefectly fine with it, to some people it might be too peaky.
but the arguement was that higher altitudes have very minimal effect on peak hp for turbo cars. whether or not it will shift the power band is another story, but you guys make it sound like the power band would shift by a whole 1000rpms when your up high. i don't think that would be the case. the turbo only has to spin fast enough to make an equivalent of 1 additional psi to compensate for the less dense air. it would barely alter the power graph. i mean people creep and spike more boost then that.

Yeah, that's true...it never crossed my mind that you'd only be needing to make a little extra boost.
And my car has only about 2500-3000rpm of useable power....hence, you would understand my fussiness over userble power. I mean, my turbo runs out of puff at about 6000rpm (redline 7) and turbo doesn't hit peak till 3500-3600 and everything under 2500 is rubbish.

The car should have the power to run 10's.
Should be trapping up around that 125 MPH number. Give or take of course....but it better trap over 120 MPH or I will be pissed.
Of course...this is at sea level. Here I am thinking 12.3 at 115 (again....give or take).
About the levels of boost here compared to sea level.....
I don't know much about forced induction. But I do know this....
N/A loses the most power here. Most lose 1+ seconds in the 1/4.
Then supercharged cars. Most lose .6-.8 seconds in the 1/4.
Then turbo cars. Most lose .4-.6 seconds in the 1/4.
This is kind of why I went with N/A for now. Respect/fun factor.
I should be one of the FEW cars at Bandimere that drive to the track and pop off lower 12's on the motor.

All the hoses as well. Including the power steering cooler.
Drained the tranny. Need to fill tomorrow.
I still need to add coolant to radiator.

Rear control arms need installed.
Wiring under car needs hung up properly.
Need to find a bellow to install between the MAF and the throttle body. The one I have doesn't fit.
Need to bleed the brakes.

Before that, I'm not sure when I had Hyde out last. I would say I take him out once every week or two. It's a fun car to take out on a cruise with all of the stickers.
Hell, I've even driven through New York City in Hyde ... went right down Broadway through time square :D

sitting there grumbling with his lump cams and the kid at the window
said, "Hey mister, why do you have a race car out on the street."

LS1 based 402 cubic inch.
Iron block, Stage III heads, huge cam, 90mm intake/throttle body.
Tons of other shit as well....but those are the basics.

Exhaust gets hung up Wednesday. 3" true duals.
Although in the meantime...I have to figure out this hesitation it has.
