Tune-up Questions!!!!

Ok.. I've got a question. I want to replace my spark plugs, and wires. I want to know what the GAP will have to be at? Another question is.. I didn't know that the Escort doesn't have a Cap/Rotor.. Can you tell me what a Energy Coil is? Does that link anyway to a cap/rotor on a car? I am so confused.

There should be a white label under your hood called the "Emissions Certification Label". It has the spark plug gaps. My '93 says .052 to .056 for the gap. It has a system called "Electronic Distributorless Ignition System" (EDIS). There are no moving parts to replace. The spark goes from the coil straight to the spark plug. No distributor. We are talking about the 1.9L here. The 1.8L does have a distributor. The timing is not adjustable so put in the new plugs and wires and that's it! I've never heard the term 'energy coil' but the coil or coil pack is where the spark plug wires run to.

An EDIS system doesn't need a distributor because it knows when to send the spark at the right moment. It does this with a computer (of course), a cam shaft position sensor and a crankshaft position sensor.

I changed my spark plugs and wires a few months ago and it made a big difference. I bought Motorcraft Platinum Spark Plugs and Duralast Ignition Wires from AutoZone. I have had no problems as of yet and they still look brand new.

I recommend purchasing Haynes Repair Manual for Escorts and Tracers 91-00. This book has alot of specs and clear directions on how to remove/replace parts. I can't remember how much it cost, but I purchased it at my local AutoZone.
