1990 ougar Idiot Light

My grandaughter's idiot light came on when she was on her way home this evening !
GD said that the light came on and then went off, then later flickered and eventually stayed on during the latter part of a 2 hour drive.
Would this be the EGR valve or is the 1990 Mercury Cougar more complicated than that ?
Is there any real problem in not having the Idiot Light checked out ?
Can one recycle the computer by battery disconnect ?
Your thoughts would be appreciated
