i have a 97' silverado with a vortech 305 . This is the second time this problem has happend . First time went out to start and just cranked and cranked with the smell of gas, checked the spark plugs and all were very wet, replaced plugs ,wires, cap, roter. started fine. Then today went out to start, it cranked and cranked and started and when it started it felt like it was flooded and i saw black smoke come out the tailpipe until it cleared up.Truck has 125000 miles and has had the fuel pump replaced@ 89000 mi. and recently new cap, rotor, wires, battery and ignition coil. right now I went out and and fired the truck up and it started with a little hint of a miss but cleared up.
any imput would be great, thanks in advance,Ron

The fuel press. regulator or injector unit per se down in the lower manifold is leaking, common problem on these engines, pull the upper plenum and look for puddled fuel to confirm.

I pulled the upper intake but didnt find puddled fuel but i did find all the area from the fuel body to the back of the upper intake very wet, All the area from the fuel body forward was dry,any ideas??

Did you pull the vacuum hose off the regulator? That is where they leak so you need to pull the hose to see if it is leaking.

Otherwise, you probably have an injector that is leaking.

When i got the upper intake off there wasnt any hose hooked to the fpr,
but the fpr looks as it could accept a hose . It looks like there never was one there. 130.000 mi. i am going to replace the fpr since its all apart. that being said, is there an easy to test the injectors now that I have it apart to see if I have a bad one??
thanks in advance,Ron

Just curious what happened with the vacuum hose to the FPR. I thought that they worked off of manifold vacuum .
