96 starting probs

i just bought a 96 ga 2.4dohc 5speed .bought dirt cheep
the only way it can be started is to short the starter the key wont start the engine,also none of the gauges werk ,the old owner said the ignition switch was bad ????the radio and a/c fan werk as do the headlights and all outside lights???the old owner said that behind the ignition switch there was a sensor that was melted or something like that ????any ideas????also has new ignition switch and nada still same prob?????

I have a 94 Grand Am with the EXACt same problem. It's drivin me nuts. Anybody got an idea?
