Well, I was given a dash out of a 2001 blazer w/ bezel, cluster, controls (lights, hvac) etc etc for free... So now that it's staring me in the face, I'm gonna have to install it..Passenger side airbag is still good so I'm gonna sell that on ebay and rewire everything...I'll be doing a how-to on this...Probably gonna wait till end of feb to do it..But I have all my 95-97 and 98+ wiring diagrams. Rewiring with pigtails for the cluster looks to be fairly straight forward according to my charts. Will have to weld 2 of the mounting points on the firewall, but with the dash out that will be 10 mins worth of work. So with the passenger airbag not needed, I figure I'm gonna cut a hole in the cover to flush mount my AVIC-88 so it's not in the cargo area anymore..:) That will definately be nice... :iceslolan I know, I'm :screwy:

I'm sure that you'll make it look good. Are you going to keep with the dual colors theme? I really like the way it looks now.
Make sure to take plenty pictures, this would be a great oppurtunity to make a heater core replacement how-to as well. The forum really needs one of those.

New dash is black, there will still be some gray highlights left though. The gauge cluster will be multicolor though

Wow, that will be quite an undertaking.
Takes a large set of rocks to do something like that when nothing is wrong.

Rlith, Do you think that I could mount a second generation dash in my carburated first generation?
If you think that it would work I'll have to talk to you when your done yours.

You could do it, (its been done) but there is a lot of shaving of the back of the dash you will need to do due to the curvature of the dash

Don't you just hate it When someone gives you something that will make you work and think!! HA HA. If anyone can do it I know you can. Just let us know how you get around some of the problems that will come up.

Yeah, the only problems I forsee is the cluster wiring, the other wiring is cake. I just have to make sure I don't alter any of the resistance values on the harness and it should be ok. I also know the venting will need to be shifted a little bit as well.

I'm not too worried about making it fit. More worried about the wiring, and making the insterments all work.

Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
Based on your past performance, this should look great. I like the idea of mounting your AVIC-88 in the Air Bags old spot, that should save you some room in the back...
Good Luck, can't wait to see the pics posted.

i know its possable i have seen pic on the net somewhere of a 1st gen carb with a new dash however my qustion is (cuz i used to have a 85 jimmy 2.8) since i took apart my cluster before to get to the bulbs and i can see its a cable driven speedo while the new one is elerontic i can tell cuz of the way the needle moves in my new blazer... my guess is you would have to shave it like he said cuz of the curve other thing is that you problty have to find a adapter of somekind to convert the cable to send elerontic pulse's to the cluster its been done but i assume its ALOT OF WORK,,personlly if it was me i would swap the motor with a bigger one before doing the inside but thats me.....:)

Well that's exactly what I'm planing on doing next year. Dropping in a V8 . I've got a low mileage 300hp or so 350 sitting here. And since I'll need a different transmission I may as well get a newer unit with the electronics, and a new wire harness.
If I get a chance to do all this my Blazer will most likely be off the road all summer, and will once again get a complete face lift.
