The Sunoco Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 driven by Mark Donohue was perhaps the greatest car and driver combo to ever race in the Trans-Am Series. He won 10 of 13 races in the 1968 season and the Championship.

This car is super rare, I would like to build a clone myself, it the FIRST Trans AM ever, a 1969 idea that made history.

From 1966-71, Plymouth stuffed the massive Hemi into small E-Bodies and the 1970 Hemi Cuda is widely accepted as one of the quickest and most saught after of these. Only 652 were built when new, including 14 rare convertibles, making an original Hemi 'Cuda a rare sight. These cars were forced in scarcity due to the extra $900 it cost to build one, nearly a third of the standard purchase price. At $250, the 390 bhp 440 V8 became the norm and made the Hemi Cuda an exception.

The long list of options made available for 1970 Barracudas included such goodies as rallye wheels, a range of exciting colors sich as Plum Crazy, pistol grip shifters, hockey stick sport stripes, hood pins and a variety of creature comforts. But of all the options, the R-code steet Hemi 426 was it, the most legendary muscle car engine ever made. It usually delivered 425 bhp through the solid 727 Torqueflight automatic and a 3.55:1 Sure Grip rear axle. That is, unless the car was one of the 284 that got a 4-speed manual.

With their classic shape, tire-shredding American power, limited production and huge popularity a 1970 Hemi 'Cuda can easily fetch over $150,000 USD. This is a remarkable amount for a car with the same build quailty as a mass-produced Plymouth. However, the aggressive sound of Hemi combined with visual street cred and Barrett-Jackson publicity now make these Cudas more expensive than most Ferraris produced in the same era.

Changes for 1971 were minimal and included a more complex 6 inlet grille design and fender gill louvers. Only 100 or so of these were built and the seven ultra-rare 1971 convertibles are the most expensive muscle cars money can buy. In 72, the government and EPA kicked the muscle car in the ass with emissions regulations. After that time, no more Hemi or more big block models could be ordered.

Important Examples and Sales

Documented by Galen Govier as the second 70 Hemi Cuda built on the first day of production and as Press Preview Car, this is #2 of 320 1970 Hemi Cudas in the Chrysler Registry. This car was hand built at factory before line production, and has many unique features as press car. At the 2005 Barret Jackson this car sold for record $329,400 USD.

This is the only High Impact Vitamin C HEMI 'Cuda convertible built in 1970 and is one of only 14 produced in that year. With matching numbers and an original motor with an A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, it is sure to fetch top dollar at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Auction.

You know dodge really should have built more, more cars and more hemis, the prices on this stuff are stupid. Come on, why not?

Even tho the 389 was never really faster , they still out sold the Dodge because of Price.

I know a few storis of 389 tripowers beatting hemis on the street because of the spark plug problems they had on the street. "BOGG"

Tho they sure knew what to put for a rear in those cars, D60's man thats good stuff.

I like the new look, but it kinda seems "HOT WHEELS", thats not bad, but it looks like it's about to hop about 8"s off the ground.

You know what would be cool, a AWD Hemi, the drive can be had from the Comander to the Magnum.

I know my 02 WJ as a very sweet 4x4 full time system, it pulls nice, and with an Idea like that in any new American "fast car" the SubarooScooby Dos would have some real comp in the AWD classes.

I doubt a new Challenger will have awd.

I hope the Trans-Am Series will be revived since the new Dodge Challenger will be built in 2008 as a 2008 model and the new Camaro will be built in late 2008 as a 2009 model.

I never knew Mercury had a special 1970 Cougar like that until recently.

I looked closely at the new Challenger at Indy last week. BIG car. TOO big. It appears to be on the same platform as Charger and 300. If so, it will take more than the little" hemi to unseat GTO. Charger and 300 weigh in at over 4,000 lbs. This Challenger probably will, too.
It's not a bad looking car. I'm just kinda "anti-retro". I really like modern cars. I also like old cars. I just don't like new cars trying to immitate past glory. Seems kinda "cheap" to me. I know. It sells. True enough. That doesn't make it better...

As for 389s against hemi Chargers or Cudas? Well, my GTO beat a couple of them in a standing start, but from a rolling start, all I ever saw was tail lights... Traction was their (hemi cars) biggest problem in street trim. And yes, they would load up and foul spark plugs in a heartbeat if the mixture was a tad rich.

a new GTO is coming

I've seen the concept pics of '09 GTO. It's the same basic car as the new Camaro, with Pontiac "treatment". I'm still not a fan of retro, but I must admit, the '67-ish grills look good. The car looks modern, though. Not a remake of an old body style.

Rumor has it LS-7 will be the engine, but I don't have anything to substantiate that. Hope so...
