i've had recent inspiration for the painting of my volvo 850 model.

i want to paint it up like a police car...easy enough with the white backround...but i also want some roof lights and stirpes down the side...like this...

any advice?

looking at that pic tho...might be easier to just mask it off and paint in the colours.

roof lights is the main priority.

Light could be tricky. Perhaps make a master out of wood and vacform clear plastic over it. If you don't need it transparent just carve/sand styrene sheets laminated together. Then paint it silver followed with tinted clears.

Rather than masking, the clecks on the sides migh be easier to do with squares of coloured decal. Or paint the yellow and use decal for the blue.

Fujimi molds their clear parts in just clear, not clear red or blue so that parts pack would be a good start. Also, if you are in the US, try a company called "Chimneyville hobbies" (Google their name), they make police car accessories. Quality is decent but their customer service is great. Their decal sheets are stellar, though, and I remember that you can get generic police decal sets that would net you the words for the car. Also, for the sides, some decal companies make sheets of decals in color, I think mostly for railroad models. You can get a sheet of yellow decal, and a sheet of blue, and use masking tape to transfer the size and shape you need by making templates with it. Then, simply paint the car white, and apply blue and yellow stripes with pieces of decal.

I think it would be best to just paint the yellow and blue pattern on the side, get the lightbar and decals by eather canabulizing a copcar kit or as they sugested go online and buy some aftermarket sets.

Cool idea. Here's a pic of my Impreza done in this colour scheme....

For the coloured squares I used 'Solartrim'. It's a self-adhesive film designed for decorating R/C aircraft. Bought it in my local model shop for about £2 a roll. The red is a reflective tape bought in Halfords. Since building this I also managed to get some off-cuts of the reflective material used to trim real police cars but its way too thick to be used on models - so don't even bother going down this route!

The light bar came off a Tamiya Supra pace-car, but I also saw a few die-cast models that could have donated some parts.

Good luck and I look forward to an in-progess thread for this one. :)

For info on solartrim see http://www.solarfilm.co.uk/
