Jack up the cab or lower the engine and or trans.
But if you work at it you can get one or two fingers in there.
or just take it to your local mechanic and let him have at it.
Good luck

And if you try it, be extra careful not to drop the mounting bolts into the bellhousing when you re-instal the sensor. You don't want to have to remove the tranny to get a bolt back out of the bellhousing.

It's pretty easy if you jack up the truck high enough to move around. I use a 36" 3/8 extension and a swivel socket (not swivel extension) to reach up along the transmission. You can place and start the bolts from the top or bottom by hand.
Invest in a small swivel socket and long extension frm Sears or equivilant. You'll use them a lot.

As others have said, it's a tight fit but doable with common hand tools.

Tie a long string or small wire to the connector before you remove the old one. You can then use it to pull the harness back up after you install the CPS. Be careful, don't overtighten the bolts.

I have several "wobble" extensions (not universal joint). The square drive end is slighly rounded that allows the socket to swivel slightly. You can find these at nearly any store that carries tools.

I just did this on my son's 89 4X4. I put the front in up on ramps/stands then I removed the front driveshaft. I then put a jack under the trans crossmember. I removed the crossmember bolts and lowered the trans about 3 inches. Then I laid a rag over the hole and under the sensor (in case I dropped the screw). I used a socket, U-joint extension, 6" extension and removed both bolts. I then tied a string to the connector and pulled it down. Then attach the string to the new connector. I installed the outboard screww first then the inboard. It really on took about 45 minutes ( and I wnet very slow).
