Bought a 95 SL? Possible nightmare

Okay, so I bought this car knowing that it needs a timing belt, water pump, and transmission work. Well the guy that previously owned the car had transmission problems and he replaced the filter and fluid and it drove fine for about 3 months. I took it out one night and killed the water pump and after that he let it sit. Well he started driving it again after it sat for about 3-4 months and the transmission once again started its crap. I changed the transmission fluid and filter tonight and the only gear I have is reverse. Reverse is fully fuctional but when you put it in any foward gear it tries to pull but it seems as if the transmission is not fully engaging. If you jack the front end of the car up, the front wheels go foward with ease but when the car is on the ground it will not pull. So do you think its time for a new tranny or a torque converter? Any responses would be great

well first off, if he somehow drove the car w/o the timing belt I'm sure he fucked up something else, but as for tranny, I want to say synchros but I'm not too sure.
