How to apply compound?

Do i apply straight on to the body of the car?..and btw, i'm using Tamiya Ts-17 for my Z-Tune...so after spraying the paint...i just need to rub the compound till it shine?...or do i need to spray clear coat before rubbing in the compound?...Sorry guys...too many questions..hehe :rolleyes:
