So a friend of mine told me he can get me a full car with a 5 speed transmission in it. So, let's assume its a LX and has a 1.9L engine. If I had a mechanic change it around for me, would it be a hard task, consdering I have the other car right there with all the parts on it?
I've read some threads about it, and was just curious as if having the entire car is easier.
(I would just take this one, but it has alot of body damage)
thanks

you need clutch, possible axles differnces, ALL the mechanisms to get the clutch to work, shifter, manual computer, any electronic changes....it will be cheaper to just buy a Manual.

Is say leave it alone. Your money would be better spent fixing up the other one. Then you'll have two cars

I have done the auto to manual conversion on my '91 LX. you must have the complete doner car, as many parts have to be changed. I say if you can do it yourself go for it, it's a big improvement. But if you have to pay someone to do it, DON'T. The most dificult part is putting the clutch pedal in as that involves removing most of the dashboard. If anyone is interested in details I would be glad to help. And BTW no changes need to be done to the electronics, just cut the wires that go to the trans and put a jumper wire across the old neutral safty switch, it will work perfect.

I was also wondering.. There are two types of auto transmissions for this generation of escorts...
The website I am at says model #tj ratio 3.55 and model #tx ratio 4.06. I was wondering which one bolts up to a 96 with a 1.9 liter engine. I can't find anything in my Haynes about it. I am assuming it's the TX because it is more expensive.
thanks
