intake manifold gasket

The Intake Manifold Gasket in my 1998 Rodeo needs to be replaced (both the upper and lower). Also Air Fuel Induction Service needed to be performed.

I see that having the Intake Manifold Gasket fail is a common problem, however what is the common cost that everyone is running into when having this fixed (car not under warranty).

Any suggestions would be great

i don't know yet...i'm still driving around with my CEL on. per the codes and the reaction of the engine and such, i know my IMG is bad. i just haven't had time to replace it yet. as far as the cost, i was told it would be about $300-$400

This is really an easy fix if you have any kind of mechanical skills at all. You basically unbolt, remove, replace, and rebolt. When you get an intake manifold gasket kit, you get all the gaskets you'll need. It may take you several hours the first time you do it, but it's $20 versus $300.

You should not have to touch the upper/common chamber gasket on a 1998+. That would be rare for that to go. The lower IMG are the ones prone to cracking. There is two, one for each bank. The hardest part is removing the EGR feed tube & unplugging all the fuel injectors so you can lift the common chamber up high enough to r/r the IMG. That "air fuel induction service" sounds like a load of bunk. Dont let a shop do any type of fuel system cleaning. Typical shop IMG replacement for a 1998+ is ~$300.

i appreciate the answers to my post. i believe the shop is trying to take me for a ride. they want to charge me 690 for the replacement of the IMG (plus a few other things such as spark plugs which are less than 3 months old)

The upper is a paper type gasket? Everytime I took it off to get the lower ones I ripped the upper gasket. If you're careful, maybe you can spare it.

you make it sound so easy....i wish you lived closer...

in theory, i could do it...but i'm very nervous working around the engine...especially on a vehicle that is a daily driver

Surferfletch - have you had problems with your lower & upper manifold gaskets?

If so, what were your symptoms?

I tore the top off to get to the coolant tubes beneath the intake. Did it twice. I have never had drivability problems with this truck.
