i have a 95 geo metro. the problem started on along trip. the car lost power at full acc and then would backfire if you stayed on the throttle. the more you acc the more it would backfire. but if you let off allmost all the way it would run fine.
but if you take the car out of gear turn the key off wait 30 sec put it back in gear turn the key on. then let off the clutch. you can go about 2 miles. before having to do it again.
also i was using +4's in the motor. but the insulator crackes at the bottem. it also seems that if you change the plugs it takes about a week for it to start again. i was told that (ac delco) plugs would solve the problem. thay did not. the car smokes a little but dose not falow plugs. but when the insulator crackes on the +4s it falls on the 4 points.
i now that these motors burn valves. but i do not beleve this to be true.
it runs fine other wise.

thanks for any help stc

I run NGK plugs in my rollerskate--I figure it's a Jap motor, so it was designed to used Jap plugs. There were Autolites in there when I first got it and the NGKs run much smoother.

Perhaps your timing slipped? Also I would do a compression test to check for a burnt valve, it does happen with these motors.

Burnt valve won't cause your car to misfire. Like I tell everyone. DO A TUNE-UP. Check your wires, cap, and rotor. Also, check your ignition timing. If you don't know how, it'd be a good idea to invest in a repair manual. It'll explain everything.

I tried auto lite spark plugs and the car didn,t even start ,then I put old spark plugs(NGK)back it was fine,so only go with NGK and gap it rightalso check your EGR valve make sure it has good gruond and see if it holds vacume ,I would spend a liitle money buy new gasket and take it out and clean it with wire brush, another problem can be partialy pluged fuel fiter because at winter they add alcohol to gas which cleans the gas tank at gas stations and brings all that junk to your gas tank which can plug up your fuel filter,if these don,t work you might jumped a tooth on timing belt,if you decide to put new timing belt ,change your water pump at same time because in order to change waterpump you basicly have to to do same procces as timing belt,in my case I had to change water pupm and I put new timing belt at the same time, timing bet is only 17$ water pump 45$ labor 250$ which I did my self :naughty:
