Loud knocking after engine overheated

Son has a 91 merc couger w/ v6 and 214k, and was running well until he placed the thermostat in backward. The engine overheated while he was driving.
Now the engine knocks very loudly once started. The noise appears to be on the drivers side of the motor. Any ideas?
