99 grand am window regulator

I've removed the panel to the rear door to get to the regulator. I don't know how to remove it - not sure if it needs replacement. I hear the motor working & see the cables moving except the window doesn't stay up and it goes down way past where it should (3/4 down). Do I have to replace the regulator. Is it complicated? What are the steps I should follow to do this? Pls help!!! Thanks!

You may have broken window clips. This is very common among late model GA's. They are white clips that connect the metal cables to the window sashes, which hold up the glass. Tell me, can you see any broken white plastic pieces anywhere inside the bottom of the door cavity?

Thanks for the reply gravis2000... I viewed the same site, but it's for the front door(s) motor. I called to find out if they had info on replacing the rear door motor/regulator. Did you replace the motor or regulator and was it on the front or rear door? Is it the same concept? It's a little difficult to tell how to remove the part. I think I can only get the regulator (which is more expensive) from the dealership, but the motor I can get at a local auto part store for approx $100. Let me know and thanks again for replying.

Thanks for the reply Ridenour... I looked inside the door cavity and didn't see any broken white plastic pieces. If you could let me know the steps to replace these (in case they are missing/broken), I would greatly appreciate the help.

I also received a response telling me that I need to replace the motor (steps for this @ http://www.a1electric.com/grandam.htm). I'm still not sure if the motor has to be replaced since I see and hear it working, plus the site explains on how to change the front door motor/regulator.

Let me know what you think and the info on replacing the clips would be a real help.

You can tell by looking at the pictures how the unit bolts in there are 8 bolts total. The motor and the pulley assembly that holds the window is 85.00 plus 8.95 S&H. You can get it Cheaper on EBAY if you want to go that route. It is not hard to do at all. Even though it shows for the drivers side front the instructions are the same. Whatever you do don't buy it at the dealer you will pay too much.

I recently had both my front driver and passenger window fail me, so far ive only tore into the driver door, door panel is off and shims holding up both windows, the problem was the cable was wrapped around the gear inside the motor and needed replacement. This can be fixed if you remove all the pieces inside the door and use the other door as reference when putting back in. New regulators are usually around 150 per door but you can buy a cable and rig it up to work yourself. I would suggest opening the motor cover and seeing if the gear inside the motor will spin otherwise the cable could be twisted inside.
