Stereo bulbs

1999 Malibu - It seems as though every time I get in the car - another one of the buttons on the stereo is not lit up! right now it is the 3, 4, CD, AM/FM, 5 & 6 Buttons ... OBVIOUSLY this is not effecting the performance of the car, but what is going on ... are these bulbs blowing or a fuse that needs replacing ... Also ... the centre console the area by the shifter doesn't light up anymore ... What is up? Any insight would be appreciated.

The bulbs are soldered into the radio's PC board. A terrible design. Sort of like how you check transmission fluid. I don't know why Chevy designed a piece of crap like this - unless they were all on crack when they came up with these ideas. Ihave been withoout 1&4, 3&6, etc. for years and I don't plan to replace them.

I would have thought they'd put LED's on the radio, I know the climate control panel is lit by LEDs, and pretty sure the dash cluster is too. If you can get the face off the radio, it should be fairly easy to solder on some new LEDs. LEDs should last a long time, longer than they did I should think.

I know the shifter uses a regular light bulb, I changed mine a year ago. I forget the bulb size, but do a search, I know I found it on here before.

Thanks for reporting this. I have a 98 with 96,000 miles and my 1 and 4 lights went out a couple of weeks ago. I have been trying to figure this out myself.
