Fuel Pump going out every 3-6 weeks :(

My 2000 Jimmy's fuel pump went out about 4 months ago, and I had a friend install one from Advance Auto. The next week the passenger power window quit working. It ran good for about a month after that, then I drove about five hours down to tampa and noticed i was losing power as I drove. It cut off as soon as I got to the airport. The next day the door locks quit working which is a pain cause there is no other way to open the back hatch. Two days later I drove back and about 2 hours into the trip I started to lose accelleration and if i was going uphill it would slow to 55 mph or slower, then it just started shutting off every 1/2 - 10 miles. I had it replaced again on the way back, just warranty swapping it out and paying a mechanic to install it. That worked for about four - five weeks. Replaced again (another warranty swap) but this time I replaced out the wiring harness also, which I had to get from NAPA as Advance has not heard of it. Ran great for a couple of weeks, ran quieter too, and then slowly i noticed a lack of accelleration then it just got worse slowly and now it hesitates very badly and I know it's only a matter of time before it dies. Has anyone else had trouble with "Master" fuel pumps? Or can anyone think of something else causing these fuel pumps to fail. Fuel filter is not clogged, oil is changed regularly. I would think it's something else but it runs like a champ when I replace the fuel pump.???? Help! I love my Jimmy and don't want to have to get another truck.

My first thought is bad electrical somewhere along the way. There could be a bad ground or "fuzzy" connection anywhere from the front to the back which might be cutting in and out quickly enough so you don't notice it but it's causing damage to the pump itself, kind of like unplugging\plugging in your TV repeatedly until it fries.

The other thing you might want to do is check the other common denominator here, maybe something worked it's way into your gas tank that is getting sucked up into your pump jamming\breaking\frying it after it eats enough of it. Have you taken apart any of the "broken" pumps to see what exactly failed? A friend of mine had an old truck that broke two pumps before he realized that he had a good layer of flaked\particulate rust in the bottom of his tank that would get sucked up into the pump when the tank got low and jam\break the pump each time. I'm not saying there is any rust if your tank but maybe someone dumped a cup of sand into your tank or something else got into it at some point.

I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, I didn't notice anything wrong with the fuel pump when we took it out last time, but we did drop a bolt into the fuel tank and when i reached in there to get it out there was very little sediment at the bottom of the tank, and it was resting on a corner of the tank so it would have all settled there, and i didn't notice any rust in there. As far as the electrical systems goes, is this something I could get my backyard mechanic friend to help me with or would I have to take it to the shop, and if I do need to take it in, any idea what that would cost? It is starting to seem like I should replace the pump out one more time and before it starts to act up again trade it in a something new. Thanks for your help.

No matter what electrical problems (if that is the problem) are always super easy to fix OR super hard. I'd get a hayes\chiltons manual and follow the electrical diagram for that area of the truck, check every module that runs along the circuit the fuel pump is on and physically check the wires that run from the computer to the fuel pump themselves, one of them may have been hit by a rock or a stick and is now fraying or has exposed conductor. How much could it cost to pay a shop, well assuming it's not a crooked shop, it could be very little or a lot. It's a really sucky problem to have sorry I can't be more specific.

Put on a new fuel filter if its plugged badly it will burn up the pump motor. I dont think thats the prob, should last at least 2 months plugged.

Are you running constantly on a low tank (1/4 full)? This can also contribute to failed fuel pumps. The gasoline actually cools the pumps. When you get low on gas they heat up, and if you do this constantly the brushed start to melt and boom, dead fuel pump.

Secondly, check your fuel pressure and make sure that it's not putting out too much.

Make sure the ground wire from the sending unit is connected to the frame. I also had 3 pulsators( between the fuel pump and the fuel line) rupture.
