1998 jeep backup lights

My backup lights will not go on and the bulbs are fine, is there a fuse and if so where is it?

I have the same problem. Has anyone provided a sollution?

If there is a fuse, check diagram on the box cover or read in the owners manuel. If its burt then replace it. The box on my jeep is on the passenger side floor.

Aren't the backup lights controlled through the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS)? I believe this is mounted on the transmission.

That was my thought too. Not a cheap fix for my 93 but I believe as I was checking prices it looked like a much less expensive part for later years.

Prolly a dirty NSS, Pull it out and clean ti up or replace it.

The problem is the NSS. Jeep dealer sells them for $22. I have replaced 2 them - at 35k miles and 75k miles. You will need a 1 inch deep socket. Take care releasing the electical connector - use a small screwdriver to push the tang down. A small amount of trans fluid will flow from the mounting hole.

had a persistant trans leak after having it rebuilt , turned out to be the paper thin seal on the NSS, the old one was torn from being reinstalled , new one fixed the problem.....also , had a recall ... dealer installd the step on brake to shift the trans thingy...since then the backup lights dont come on unless the "stick" is jiggled..would take it back , but the dealers service here is not worth the trouble ...best I ever found was in colorado

Was it the "secondary detant system" that the dealership installed?

I had the same thing performed last summer and afterwards it wouldn't go all the way in park, and they said that the cable needed adjusted and wanted me to pay an extra $72 for them to adjust it, I said forget it I would adjust it myself, you would think the adjustment would be part of the service, since it was there fault it needed the adjustment anyways.

So what I did was took the center consol out and loosened up the bolts that hold the secondary detant in place and moved it forward to allow the shifter to go forward enough to allow the tranny to go in PARK. That took care of the problem the secondary detant system also tightened up my shifter alot.
