Crank pulley separating?

The only time I EVER heard my 1g squeel was when the alt. belt was too loose. Guess I'm lucky.

i had this exact same prob wiv ma talon, it prob is a loose belt. jst have it tightend b/c the belt flexes a little bit when its hot, so it syatrs to slip, hence the squeal. i tightend mine up and it stopped squealing when i started it up, and hasnt squealed since then.

Make sure that:

1) the belts are OEM

2) are adequately tight, as mentioned above by others

3) your pulleys are put on correctly. A pully installed "backwards" my have only a difference in protrusion of as little as half a millimeter, but that is enough to cause squeaking and squeeling (personal experience, a mitsu tech noted than the alternator pulley was installed backwards. Squeeling stopped after correction).

4) youre a DSMer. start worrying when your car isn't making funny sounds!

My power steering and a/c belt always squeeked when it was cold. All I needed was a new belt. Now that my belt tensioner bolt broke off, it only squeeks when its cold and I turn the wheel alot. Woohoo!

Isn't is bad to put oil on the belts? My belts squeel too when it's warming up, but then it goes away after a couple mins. How do you know how much to tighten them?

Btw, does anyone else's brakes squeel *really* bad the first couple times you use them when it's real cold out?

Meeeee. The new belt doesn't squeek at all when I'm sitting there. But once I turn the wheel about 1 1/2 - 2 times it fuckin screams like a banshee. So I just sit there and rev a 2k to warm things up.

So oil on the belts is a bad thing? Cause It doesn't squeel at all now :sly:

When Jake was putting his new engine in someone said "I hope you made sure not to get anything on the belts." And jake said "no, I'm always really careful about that."

Tell me how it goes, Cause my squeeling was terrible. I would be driving it for an hour and the squeeling would start when I stopped at a light. That Oil did the trick :naughty:

I still don't understand how you know how much to tighten it. To check the tension you need a tension gauge. And I think those are pretty expensive.

i don't think you should put oil on the belts...even belt dressing isn't good for it

I used to tighten till I couldn't turn it anymore. Now that the bolt shitted on me, I just used a buddy and a crowbar.

***Here's the latest update***...

The squeeling came back!!!

Here's a new thing im noticing now.. Since I got my new waterpump installed, it doesn't leak anymore. However, if im in 2nd gear, if im not holding the shift, it will slip out of 2nd gear into N.

You think this has something to do with the machanic when he installed the waterpump or is it the oil i put on the belts to stop the squeeling??? :uhoh:

uhhh thats really weird... lol i would just check all the nuts and bolts to make sure they're tight... i cant think of anything else if you got a new water pump... how old is your altenator?

i don't think your shifter slipping out of 2nd gear has anything to do with your waterpump...that sounds like a tranny or clutch problem.

2006 ECLIPSE GT
01-05-2006, 01:56 PM
do u know what belt is squeeling, the ps or alt?

one of the ways u can tell if its the ps belt...turn on your car, have someone turn the wheel and look at the ps belt to if its skips. if so, it needs more tension and be sure every bolt is tight as shit...oh, and check the ps fluid.

I never did try the oil thing. But the squeeking persisted as normally. But then today I heard it squeeking around the 5k rpm - 6.5k rpm range. That pissd me off and I said fuck it, so the belts off and its back to that good ol non-power assisted steering. Its cold here so I won't need the A/C anyways.

Not sure if it's been changed or it's the same alt that came with the car. Im planning on changing that also.

2006 ECLIPSE GT - I believe it's the power steering belt, when i turn the wheel, it squeels..

Now i know the waterpump has nothing to do with shifter slipping out of 2nd gear, however, im wondering if the machinic messed something up in the process cause this never happened before. Now all of the sudden it's doing it

You should NEVER put ANYTHING (belt dressing, oil, coke, or godknows what else you guys might try) on your belts. This is the first thing I learned in the class I went to hosted by Goodyear. Unless you just like to buy belts. If the belt is squealing then refer to Shpyder's list. You have other problems. How many miles on your pulleys? They wear out too.

Dirty oil

is your ps fluid full? when my friends 95 gst ps belt was squealing, it was becuz ps fluid line had a leak. so he had to refill it every few days or the friggin thing will squeal loud.

Ok.. no more oil on the belts. I have no idea what a pulley is so hopefully you guys can help me so i dont go spending more than I should. The car has 146000 miles in it.. When im driving nowdays, I hear a scratchy noise after I shift while the car is moving. Could it be the Clutch? Then again, it's slipping out of gear.. example: I drop it in 2nd, I hit a bump and pop.. it's in neutral...

So it's eithier..

a) Transmission
b) Clutch

As for the squeeling...

a) PS fluid
b)http://home.earthlink.net/~twc4078225795/images/pulley.jpg

Is this Correct??

***Breaking News****

Ok, soooooo, I start the car tonite and let it warm up for a good 5 minutes. Hours before I had added some PS fluid in the car so im thinking it should be better..However, I still hear the squeeling. Start to go down the street when suddenly the PS belt comes off..

You had to get towed because your power steering went out?! Man, I took mine off purposely and I'm daily driving it. Mine slipped off once on the highway and I didn't realize it until I had to turn.

But anyways, so the waterpump screwed up on you too?

No the waterpump is fine.. But I think the jackoff that put it in screwed up something that has to do with that belt. It was closing time and he was in a hurry to get the car out of the shop.. so who knows..

***Update***

As of 1/09/06-monday, I fixed the belt, the car doesn't squeel like it did before.

Today 1/10/06-Tuesday, Im driving to work early this morning on the expressway. I get to forth gear and suddenly the car cuts off on me.. AAA comes out for me (3rd time this week) and tows it to the Shop ONCE AGAINhttp://home.earthlink.net/~twc4078225795/images/dammit.gif

I spoke to a Road Ranger before the AAA came out and he said it could be the Fuel Pump that gave out on me

Is this something that's going to cost me alot (for estimate purposes) of course...?
