Okey...the thing is that everyone talks about v-tecs,and i know a lot about cars from the application of parts to the driving to car specs but i havent done much research about v-tecs and what they really are.Thats why I ask all u nice people out here to please for gods sake tell me what makes them so special!

What i know about them:
-Stock motor for all civics?or newer ones
-Can be really loud
-Have a bunch of parts for them
-Are 4-cyl.
-In most cases can pull near 500HP or less few cases higher.
But thats pretty much it maybe theres something i can think of now so tell me why they are so famous!

not stock motors for all civics but some of them...any car can be loud...yes they have a lot of aftermarket support...yes they are 4 cylinder...yes they have that kind of potential but that much power in fwd isnt so nice ...ummm the civic is a really light car so therefore there isnt much power needed to get it going...your probably referring to the DOHC VTEC motors which are popular and VTEC is a nice system to have and is a great for high end power and vtec turbo is also a badass combo...also compared to other things hondas can be made fast for a fairly good price (that includes the car you cant compare $1000 put into a civic and $1000 put into a LS1)

i don't know where to start on this one......

B series are good engines...they are the DOHC VTEC's (dual overhead cam) and they have VTEC on the exhaust and intake valves. VTEC is basically a power setting on the cam that is hydraulically activated when the engine reaches a certain RPM.

SOHC VTEC engines have the same thing but the VTEC only uses the intake valves....

The only real way to understand it is to go to www.howstuffworks.com and read. Mainly these engines are popular because they are well built and parts aren't scarce....

Just to re-iterate... VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. The name VTEC I think is a Honda trademark, but pretty much every other company has their version of variable valve timing on their modern engine. I think the reason that Honda is famous for their VTEC is because they were one of the first ones to really get into it as well as they come up with the latest stuff as shown in new generation of i-VTEC motors.

Simple way of putting it, the motor allow different cam lobes to be used at different RPM. SOHC, single overhead cam an DOHC, double overhead cam both work in similar principal. VTEC is actuated by oil pressure into a lifter that operates another valve at higher RPM. Of course there are different variations, such as stage I, II, and III, but I won't get into that.

Fascinating stuff...

DOHC=Dual over head cam, SOHC=Single over head cam...Other cars have them too, its just the number of camshaft and arrangement/position...nothing special.

Honda made VTEC popular because they put it in economy cars, not just high performance cars. Also, the engines were reliable with it(there has not been any issues with the VTEC system). VTEC wasn't just in 4-cylinders though; some of their V6s have them(most famous of the V6s is the NSX's).

I've noticed noone said this yet, but VTEC and similar systems are pretty much just two camshaft profiles in one. The "i" in i-VTEC and VVTL-i control the timing of the camshaft; it advances and retards the cam timing for optimal powerband or economy.

As for "i-VTEC", I believe Toyota came up with a system like that before Honda with their VVTL-i system(released few years before i-VTEC).
