Hi ppl, Im sure you havent seen me around here before as I drive a DSM and thus frequent those boards. However I was driving my aunts 96 avalon today and it needed power steering fluid. I went to autozone and asked them and they pointed to stp power steering fluid. So I bought that thinking they knew what they were talking about. I put it in the power steering fluid resovior and went home. When I told me dad he had me look at the manual for the car and it says to use automatic transmission fluid and not power steering fluid. So I called them back to bitch at them and they said it wont hurt anything and that it will be just fine with it. My question is will it mess anything up or will it be ok with it? Thanks alot for any help I can get as this isnt my car 0_o

About 6 months ago I had a steering fluid leak. The garage wanted to do an expensive repair. I asked the mechanic how I would know if all the fluid ran out. He said the steering would get very stiff. Skeptically, I bought a leading brand of replacement fluid (I forget the brand), very thick and red. The label claimed it would stop the leak. Incredibly, it has and the steering is fine.
