I learned something today

today i learned that sometimes even the smallest things you do in your day can have a big impact on it. Okay this happened on my way to work.

IM driving down a 4 lane road. 4 lanes going one way. speed limit is 40MPH. Ill number the lanes so you guys can better understand me. 1 lane being far left hand lane, 4 being far right hand lane. 1 2 3 4

Ok so im driving in lane 2 behind some slow ass lady doing 35, for like a quarter of a mile with no one in front of her. There someone doing about the same in lane 3. So lane 1 is open, i give it some gas, pass both cars in lanes 2 and 3. I get over to lane 3. Lane 4 ends. The cars i passed catch up behind me. I get to my turn, i dont slow down much, i have a green light for a right hand turn. Lanes 1 and 2 also in a green to go straight. Lane directions are seperated by a grass patch in between the roads, this goes for both roads that intersect like this +. I make the turn and hear tires scretching, look in my mirror and the car that was in lane 3 behind me gets creamed by a guy who ran red light to the left of the intersection.

Had i not passed those 2 cars in lane 2 and 3, i would have been right behind the car in lane 3, right where he was when he got hit. I never look at cross traffic when going through that intersection because the inside of the intersection is so long, most people wont risk running a long yellow or red.

It was just a real eye opener to how even the smallest things you do in your day, can have a huge impact on your life.

I thought you were following the car in Lane 2, not 3?!

If you would have squared lane 2 and dived by lane 4 and added lanes 3 to 1, I think you would have also have a positive experience :D
runs, ducks and Hydes

Glad you were okay. Do you think the other person was injured? :(

most likely, it was a pretty hard hit, the cars had some good damange to them. Originally i was behind the car in lane 2, but i went around that car and went all the way over to lane 3, if that clears it up any.

wow, i run yellows when its cold/wet simply because i dont like "panic" braking with out ABS. The truck tends to wiggle once traction is lost in the rear.... controllable but not something i want to be doing with cars on both sides of me. Though its illegal to run a yellow with "time" to stop in florida ive done it once or twice infront of a cop and havent been pulled over.

Thats shear luck man. glad your ok...hope the other people are ok. Maybe the lady doing 35 in a 40 will stay off the road though :)

we have a road that used to be my quick way to get to walmart (goes just outside of town all the way around, as opposed to straight through town) but now that everyoen has discovered yo ucan go this way (they just finished the road like 2months before i started driving) there is always some old fart doing 30-35 in a 45. the road has alot of sweeping cirves and old farts cant feel even 0.1 lateral G's...it scares them.

If the other cars you where behind had been driving faster they would have cleared the intersection before that guy ran the light. See thats why I drive 70 everywhere despite whatever the speed limit is. The streets are a dangerous place, the less time you are on them the better your chances.

lmao

but seriosuly, that is why they need to open up speed limits on expresseways...its proven that the faster traffic flows the less "traffic" there is.

You drive 70 on neighborhood streets? Remind me to never go where you live.

The problem is once you do that you let every unskilled moron on the road drive 100mph...You would basically have to absorb a few years of record high accident rates as people basically learn how to handle cars at high speeds

Also police won't let it happen, too much ticket revenue lost

I'm with the Musashi on that one! ^^^

Glad you're okay Jayson.

If it makes you feel any better about almost being smashed, I had a nice little incident with the SS today. While Driving on a surface road about 1 hr ago, doing about 45 mph I nailed a small, metal water pipe cover. The thing is about 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide(it's round) with the sharp, hollow side was facing up and the damned thing was about 2 feet from the hole in the street that it's supposed to cover! Front pass rim had a one inch crack/dent and the sidewall of the tire was split. Now I have to make a claim with the city and hope like hell that they give a damn, although I doubt it. I could be taking a $600 hit for this one.

On a side note, the two officers that showed up to inspect the whole deal were very helpfull, and nice at that.

Feel better now? I know I don't. :grinno:

which is why the autobahn has record lows as far as accidents are concerned correct?

German drivers are better than American drivers, as they have been driving that way since they built the Autobahn. But yeah, I agree that our highways should have a 100 mph+ speed limit. Then they could assign one lane as a "granny" lane, for those lame drivers that can't go over 55 without feeling unsafe or wrecking.

lol you think gas prices are now? Imagine how bad they would be if everyone was driving 100 MPH

i would say itd have to atleast be a 3 lane highway though, with the far left being primary fast lane... i think itd be a little hairy with only 2 lanes. which is mostly what i have around here.

glad ur ok jayson :bigthumb:

All the stuff we have within the Phx-Metro boarders is 3-5 lanes, so for us it would be awesome. The stuff outside of town is usually 2 lanes though, but I think anything should go on those roads as well, and if people don't like it, then they can walk! :lol2:

We will make our roads so scary to drive on, that only the bravest will venture out onto them, making traffic much more tollerable. The rest of the lamers can use public transportation....ewww. :eek7:

American drivers are almost the opposite of german drivers. Because driver license is expensive and can be recieved after 18 after completing driving school, people actually appreciate it. In US anyone with half a brain can get it, I've seen people who seriusly cannot drive getting driver licenses.
You never see a driver sipping on that Coke while driving on the autobahn, if one gets a call the driver must safely stop and then take the call. The technology of the road is also a lot better than here, the autobahn is maintained religiusly using the best equipment and technologies. It is also stricktly controlled, sensors find tailgaters and you get a ticket for following too close, no warnings.

American autobahn would be a disaster with all the SUVs and shit.

I get about 30mpg at 60...I get between 40 and 50 when going 80...

And from what I recall from a program on History, the Autobahn is no longer unlimited with speed, but it has an adjustable speed limit depending on the amount of traffic and traffic flow. Still, the limits are usually higher.

I'm not sure where I read this, but when the USA highways were built, they were built for an average cruising speed of 100 MPH

my car gets its best fuel economy at ~70 mph

A lot of cars CAN'T safely go 100 mph, including a lot of ones owned by people on this site.

American highways were not built for 100 mph, there are many turns on old highways that are marked at 45 mph because thats the safe speed for many cars. The speed limit on all of them when they were built was 45 mph.

I agree though, people who are going slower need to stay right and it would be safer for everyone.

I mistyped when I said the speed limit at the beginning was 45, I meant 55, but here's a reference saying that they were built for travel at ~70 mph

either way 70mph....i still travel down it at like 80 normally, if heavy traffic then maybe ill be at 70mph...i like the idea of 100+ speed limits tho, there would be a whole lot more accedents up in the mid west since almost erone's car is a winter car, they dont keep all their tire properly influated to the same psi per tire, suspentions are always messed up(in the city) and many people refuse to pay 80 bucks for a wheel alignment to safely drive over 60mph without wobbling in the front tires or any of them. most of the cars up here are old and torn down so it wouldn't be such a great idea...but i could see that happening in the desert, or iowa, indiana(corn field state) and in some parts of texas and california. diddnt there used to be a no speed limit in a 10mile road in texus and some parts of montana?
