I have a 1972 superbeetle and my steering wheel starts vibrating from 55 to 70 mph. I had this problem 3 months ago, and i got my suspension redone. the problem went away, but now its back. I also hear rattling noise when the steering wheel starts to vibrate. I got the steering damper checked and it turned out to be fine. Does anyone know why it is doing this, and if so how do i fix it? Could it be the steering wheel housing column bearing? I appreciate any help or advice anyone has.

Its your steering Damper its bad. Just buy a new one for around 25 bucks and change it. It looks like a shock and it absorbs all of the shaking. Good luck!

71 & 72 Superbeetle are known for the shakes...get your tires balanced with the wheels on the car
worked for me when I had my 72 Super

deadBeat is correct. The SuperBeetle tires should be spin balanced on the vehicle, and NOT on a tire balancer machine to get the best balance.
