ok i have a b16 and my ecu is chipped, and one of the things that my chip does, is it engages my Vtec at about 4200 rpm, and at the range im only doing 120km/h. so when im travelling on the highway i usually like to travel faster than that, so i want to know if it is ok to let my Vtec engage and let it stay that way for an extended period of time???
thanks

I used to cruise on the freeway in my integra with vtec kicked in, and it kicked in at 5,200. My speedo never worked, wonder how fast I was actually going...

The biggest problem with that is the stress the motor will be under while in Vtec. It is one thing to hit vtec while racing but when you are at a constant speed for an extented period of time it will not be to good on the motor to stress it for that long. You will probably start leaking oil at most of your seals soon after driving that long in Vtec and who knows how long the motor will actually last??? Get the problem fixed you don't want to kill the longevity of your motor. my :2cents: as a honda mechanic

you're an idiot, never post again please. it wont hurt the motor at all, all its doing is opening the valves longer and and higher. no oil is going to leak if the motor is in good shape. Vtec isnt even there for "racing", its there for making more power in the higher rpms, while still having a nice idle and low end torque. Please don't post up anymore wrong info.

DUMB JACK ASS!!! You are just a layed off POOL BOY you obviously don't know shit about engines, You don't even know how to interpret my original post. I know what VTEC is for. If a motor is run for 100,000 miles in Vtec(extreme example) and 100,000 miles at a reg RPM you actually think the motor will not endure more abuse???????? Shut the FU_K UP! you sound like you would fit right in as a Wal-mart lube tech!

What dude, you think cause you build models you know how to work on cars? Did you maybe do a search of my previous posts? I guess not, or you would notice I post a good bit of tech info on here. Have you ever driven a b series with a b16 trans on any major road, its hard to stay out of vtec on the express way when keeping up with traffic.
As far as me not knowing anything about motors, I'll let you think what you want, but I will let you know I've attended UTI for the past year, with a few months left, with 3 years of previous expreience with working on cars and pulling motors apart.

hey hybrid how do u like UTI I am planning on going there as soon as I can do u by chance remember how much it cost?just curious and yeah man I gotta agree with u cuz my homeboy had a 97 gsr and we took road trips and put 75k miles plus just on the freeway at speeds over 100 almost everhytime and his engine never had a problem, but that doesnt mean there couldnt be one right?just curious not saying ur wrong

tuition for the school alone is 23,000. There are also extra courses you can take, like ford fact and diesel. its an ok school.
Any yeah anything can go wrong at any time, thats pretty much like saying driving your car is bad for it.

Ok, both of you are correct. The VTEC is to open up the higher rpms while still giving a nice idle and etc. But yes, keeping it in VTEC will put some wear and tear on the motor that it wouldn't have recieved if it was babied and never hit it. But its not gonna hit an extreme like Mean B16 stated. If you think about it, its just like putting an aftermarket cam in your car, but you still get the privilege of a steady idle. People who put aftermarket cams in their cars understand there is going to be a little more tear on it, but nothing to that extreme unless something else is terribly wrong with the motor.

how is it going to stress the motor it just using the 3rd cam lob on the vtec cam. It just like putting in a cam in a non vtec motor. It the high rpm that will wear the motor. I'm agree with hybrid1990crx. But who cares, performance is what most of us are after anyway. Shit I have a friend that use nos on his b16 3+ time a week for 2 years now and it still running strong.

That is pretty much all I was saying, no extreme was implied in the original post so I was just generalizing an extreme to better explain my point. Sure the motor will last a long time under that abuse, it's a honda.
No much was explained by the original post but If it were me 4200rpm is to early for Vtec to engage and it sounds like it was a generic chip that was ordered with a generic program. The right way to really chip your vehicle is to do it accordingly with your mods and the use of a dyno is pretty much a must for best results. So that's another reason I reccomend a different chip for his vehicle but to each his own
I have a '92 GSR ys1 tranny in my REX and it only revs to 4k when I am at 70mph for me to hit Vtec in 5th gear I am already going fast enough for a ticket (85-90mph I think but can't remember) and I don't really like cops or paying my lawyer to get me out of the ticket so I try to keep it pretty legal on the street.
Well I feel like I have rambled on way too much for this simple question that really just breaks down to semantics anyway so I'm out.

yeah agree with 4200rpm being way to early for a motor with not many mods. all its doing is making its noise early lol, the air fuel maps are still the same, so its not really helping at all, unless the chip remaps them, which i doubt that lol.
but yeah im glad you guys see it my way lol, but mean_16 was just saying that it would hurt the motor more than if my grandma was driving it, buts thats not how you are suppose to treat a b series :evillol:

Its not the actual VTEC that kills your motor, its just the revs. There are some guys in Germany that constantly cruise in VTEC and see no more problems than people who cruise out of VTEC.
Now if you're flooring it all the time, that's a whole other issue.

Very well said, I agree. I know my motor has over 100K on it now since I have had it and I have driven it like I stole it everyday and can't count the times it's been down the strip and shes still purrs like a kitten. Though I am starting to burn a little oil, oh well I got my moneys worth :smokin:
