Rattle(exhaust???) under Passport during acceleration....

I need EXPERIENCED help with this. - PLEASE- no random guesses!

OK, this is driving me nuts. My 98 Passport has a loud rattling noise from under the passenger side during acceleration 2500rpm`s or so. will do it when its winding out & stops after it shifts. also it does it at any acceleration at highway speeds.
i initially thought it may have been valve clatter(although it didnt sound like valve clatter), but its not ,its too loud & i already did the clean the egr thing, to no evail , & also its coming from underneath the truck.
i did a search & one person asked about this problem & only one other person suggested if it was the brake shield rattling(NOT!!).

so, has anyone had this problem and actually fixed it, if so, what was it??

I have a 97 rodeo that recently had the exhaust sheilds get so rusted they fell off, Once i took the skidplate out to look at them I found 2 wedged between the skidplate and the tranny, the rest I welded on better or replaced. This would only take like 5 min. to check, so give it a try. Good Luck.

This part is sort of obnoxious so I'll suggest that you simply get under the truck and look for loose stuff. :iceslolan

I had a similar sound in the exhaust of my 98 when accelerating. Mechanic friend of mine listened to it and said it was prolly some of the structure inside the catalytic converter just breaking loose and that it would go away in time. Sure enough, a few days later it went away.

Had the same thing happen, one of my O2 sensors was loose and just rattling around. Only heard it on acceleration, not a cruising speed. And, as you I initally thought it was coming out of the engine, but was too loud and not consistent.

Then you might want to take it to a mechanic - seriously.

We're all just here to help one another, and yes, this does mean taking guesses on occasion - we can't hear the SAME noise you're hearing and we are not mechanics, we are simply friendly Isuzu Rodeo owners who have had to learn odds and ends as time passes by, and yes, this means throwing out random guesses to other owners from what we have experienced which may or may not be the exact situation you're experiencing.

As to the sound, I'm not going to guess because I'm not "experienced" in all sounds.

Just my :2cents: and I'm sorry if it comes off rude, but we are all here to help each other save a dime here and there if it's something we can fix on our own without having to take it to a mechanic for every sound, CEL, etc, but in your case, sounds like you'd be happier having an experienced sound technician look at your truck.

Thanks to those of you who genuinely posted replies, and AS I ASKED actually had this problem & knew what it took to fix it. i will check the heat shields again & skid plates & the converter.
well, i guess you other clever guys have proved why i put that in my post.i guess theres no avoiding offending some people, but i just wasnt asking for random opinions,as i already have a certain knowlege of vehicles. i dont know how much more eloquent i can be in simply asking PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM what the solution to it was. i guess it was too tempting for some who are too clever.

StevB,

You have to realize that some people on this board are mechanics, and then the majority of us are just guys(and girls) that try to fix their Rodeo's on their own therefore you will get lots of educated guesses. In fact taking it to a mechanics is also going to be a guy that's giving u an educated guess at $75 an hour.

i do realize that.thanks for reminding me. but my post specifically was aimed toward the specific group of people as i said"had experienced the problem & knew what cured it."
those are the only replies that would do me any good and i KNOW this, and did not want to WASTE any of mine, as well as other members` valuable time.
why did that stir up all this childish drama?? :uhoh: it`s just really sad........
again, you guys who sincerely helped, thanks so much.

its the heat shield on the cat convertor. it can also be a loose exhaust bracket, allow the whole system to vibrate. it could also be the exhaust manifold itself, it could come loose at the flanges that attach the pipes, creating a rattle. it could be a bad muffler with loose parts inside, it could be a bad cat conv with loose parts inside....

these are not guesses, they are remedies of past experiences....but you must conclude one before moving on the to other...like a puzzle...

have someone rev the engine as you walk around outside the vehicle and check some of these areas....safety first. don't lay under the vehicle while it is on--or otherwise for that matter...

now go have some fun...

"Something is rattling" is not nearly a specific enough problem for someone to have had the exact same experience. I also have a rattle on acceleration but I know exactly what is causing it, my wife backed into something and bent the tailpipe and its now too close to the frame of the truck. Maybe your wife bent your tailpipe too. :grinno:

I know your type from my time working at an auto parts store. You want that magic cheapy quicky fix that takes no time, no thought, no tools and only costs 5 bucks.

I have had people (it really happened, multiple times) that walked into the store and simply asked, "My car won't start, whats wrong with it?" and thats the extent of the information they give you, then when you pry out some smidgen of useful information, they get all huffy when you tell them how much the parts costs that they MIGHT need and they actually will have to do some investigation to find out if they need that part or some other part. "You're the parts expert! Don't you know anything?!?" ***SMACK***BOOTTOTHEHEAD***

Lol, this thread is entertaining. Guy comes in telling people the kind of help he wants and what he'll accept. He then can't understand why people are bent out of shape and aren't in a hurry to help.

Good luck with the problem, try a different (friendly) approach next time, it will lead to better results.

Sometimes the typed word looks different than it sounds, but the way the question was asked came off rude to me.

I thought the same.

I may have interpreted incorrectly; but it doesn't look as if I'm the only one who did. Even some actual mechanics are choosing not to answer.

That says a lot about how the wording came across. Besides it's not as if people who would have chosen to answer would've been wasting their time, if they thought that they wouldn't be here to begin with to assist others.

I was just wondering what exactly is required in order for someone to be considered an expert in internet automotive trouble-shooting. :dunno:
