Hey today one of my heater hoses blew and to get to it i had to take off the distributor cap. now when i did that i found the inside of the cap and my rotor to be oil soaked, what could that be from?

Hiya,

I know this thread is old, but its what my search turned up. My nephew has an 87 Celica and has oil in the distributor cap. The local rip-off artists (mechanic) told him he needs a new distributor. Is this true? I know alot about cars but not much about his specific car. It seems to me like a new o-ring and a good cleaning would do the trick. Thanks for the help.

Sorry, I havn't looked at the car yet, metal behind what gasket? It will probably be obvious what your talking about when I see the car, but can you describe?

I think he means the shaft on the end of the distributor that has the gear which interlocks with the drive train inside the engine.
