Hi,
Please Help...Went shopping on my lunch hour during work, came back to my car to go back to work and it wouldn't start. The security light came on and keeps flashing. It will turn over but not start so I don't think it is the battery. What does the security light mean?
Thanks,
Trisha

Welcome to AF! The security light can come on for any reason. If you opened the door with the wrong key or you used a non-oem key to try to start it or if it just wants to come on. This has been a real problem with the Grand Am. You can reset it by doing the following: Set the emergency brake and turn off all accessories. Insert the key and turn the ignition to the on position for 10 minutes. Turn the key off for 10 seconds and repeat. After the third 10 minute period the car should start. Make sure you use an OEM key and if you have another original key you may try that before you try the reset procedure. Sometimes that will work. I hope this helps.

My Christmas Eve 2005 started off as a diaster and finished with a thumbs up thanks to GTP Dad. I own a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 with 69,000 KM's on it. Yes it's Canadian. This vehicle has had its share of problems as follows:
1. Squeeky brakes. GM knows they are installing defective calipers on all models and plans on doing nothing about it over the short term or the long term. I received a caliper lube job from dealer. No charge. So far no squeeks.
2. ABS speed sensor (Right Front). Problematic area, have had to replace this sensor twice.
3. Change Oil light always comes on. What a nuisance light. Always reseting using owner's manual guidelines.
4. Hood release cable does not work in very cold Canadian weather.
5. Massive water leak in trunk. Had repaired at dealer. GM factory forgot to install plug in right rear quarter panel. No charge for repair and I also received new trunk carpet and jack.
6. Today, Christmas Eve 2005. Turned car off, went in store. Came back out and car would turn over but would not fire. Left car, went home on foot and surfed internet only to find the greatest human to walk the planet, GTP Dad, you my friend are a life and money saver!!! Your wonderful reset procedure for the security light worked great and 30 short minutes after I started reset procedure, the BLEEPING GM PIECE OF **** started and is now back in driveway. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you from Canada.
Finally, this is my last GM car I will ever buy. I have been a GM customer for 30 years, NEVER AGAIN!! Next car will be VW JETTA TDI. I hear they are great and never break!
Thanks again GTP Dad. Your the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to AF!! Actually it isn't all GM products that are bad it is just that Grand Am's seem to have problems with the security system. I am very glad that I could help you with your problem!
Merry Christmas!

I know these GAs have their problems but 1 thing did bother me that I heard on CNBC when they were interviewing people on the assembly lines buildind cars about the massive layoffs, plant closings, GM will have to do to survive. Also their main parts supplier DELPHI is already in bankruptcy. One woman had said and this is about as close to the quote I can remember " whats the incentive for building a good car when you know you might not have a job next week " and I'm sure that mindset is all over. She was the only 1 to say it in front of a camera !! I was thinking the same thing weeks ago when all this GM stuff was coming down. Alot of people will NOT care what and how they are putting into these cars. I would'nt buy a new GM for a long time. The quality just can't be trusted at this time and with people in these types of moods. Can't wait to see what problems they have with these cars being mage right now in the future.
