Hi
The 96 Jetta I bought has failed a recent emissions test. Engine light had been on. The mechanic who looked at it prior to purchase thought the engine was fine and reset the OBD system. I need to drive it round for a while apparently to charge the system with sufficient info. for diagnosis. Despite what he said, there is a rough noise coming from the car, but I'm having a tough time figuring out exactly where it's coming from (engine, exhaust etc.). It idles okay and is quiet. I got the car cheap so can afford to throw a bit of money at it.
(There is also a small knocking sound when turning right).
Anyone got any ideas what the likely problem is?
Thanks

I assume that the noise is not present when the engine is idling. Jack the right front tire and check the wheel bearing, ball joints, cv joints and all other associated items pertaining to the suspension system.

My guess is that the knocking noise is a bad CV joint.
