2000 grand am heater only worked on number 5. changed resistor. first time i turned it on, blew out 1 and 2. what is causing the resistor to go bad. my guess is it is the motor itself. whats common

you sure the resister was in the right direction? they are directional one way. Check the wiring under the hood that plugs in to the blower.
Thier is a relay labeld HVAC in the fuse panel in the car dash. A relay under the hood too, blower/heater.
You can use a voltmeter and back probe the conector on the fan blower and check it with the switch inside on each blower position.
If thier is voltage present but the motor doesnt work then its probley bad.
If no voltage at the blow at all speeds and the blow its self was checked ok, then check the resister.
One other thing if you had the radio out or dash open you may hav knocked a vacum line loose, you'll here the hiss when you turn the speed selector. Good Luck

blower motor is bad.
If motor is running on 5 it is getting power and should run on 1,2,3,or 4....blower motor is bad.
