Smoke not uniform

I'm trying to paint smoke onto the 'roof' of the Messerschimdt bubble car. The roof isn't flat but curved like the cowl of a plane. I've tried to airbrush and to paint it on with a brush. With either option I cannot get a unifrom tint. What am I doing wrong?
My second question is regarding the BMW bubble car. The body is clear and I plan to paint it white. How should I prepare the clear surface?

Here is a pic of the kit:

The Messerschmidt kit looks like a black roof but it is smoke.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks! I take it I must give multiple coats of smoke through the airbrush then?
The kit is pricey but I had to have it!

Will do Klutz_100. The kit is very basic. Curbside on both. They each have five steps in the building process! The only thing is that because they are so small, masking (there is a lot of it to be done) is very difficult! The Messerschmidt is almost done. I will take some pics tonight and this weekend of what I'm doing. I will post on Tuesday when I'm back at work.

I've a check in your profile: I simply not want talk with you! (I'm too much gelous :grinno: ) mmmmmmmminghia you've a fulvia rallye? fantastic stuff man, congrats

seriously: I found out this paint not really easy to do, however thin it right and perform the coats you need: sometime (skyline's side window) when after a couple of coat isn't dark enough I try to add a bit of x18 or xf1. Acrilics cure quetly fast so you can spay coats betwenn 20/30 mins.

HEHE! The Fulvia is OK. She isn't in running order. I can mail you some pics if you are keen. I figured that since I can't find a 1:24 kit I'll have to buy the real thing and get it sorted out.

Spray the inside with a thin coat af Dullcote first. It will give the smoke something to bite to and not run so easily.
Then build up several thin layers of Tamiya Acrylic Smoke, letting each coat dry before applying the next. It make take 10 coats, just don't flood any of them, do them as semi dry coats.
Once you have achieved the desired shade, let it dry overnight. If it is still not level and shiny, you can clear gloss coat the inside.

Or decant the new Tamiya Smoke lacquer and airbrush it, it is much darker than the acrylic, but also likes to run if put on too wet.

Prepare the plastic like any other kit, I would lightly prime both sides of it with white primer before shooing the white paint on the outside... - Mark

Thanks guys! I'll try those tips as soon as I get a free moment. Thanks for the info Sjelic. I'd love one of those kits but they are a bit expensive for me! Here are pics of my Fulvia. Will start work next year. I know this isn't the right forum but if anyone is keen to follow the progress let me know. It will take me a long time though!

HP or BHP = Horse Power or Brake Horse Power. Sorry for that!

Oh! Sorry we have KW here so HP isn't a familiar term! I guess you'll enjoy the Fiat 500 I just completed and the 695SS I'll start one day.

It is going to be stripped to bare metal and reprayed. The colour is very dull and it has a few layers of DIY paint which don't look good at all!

Here are some progress pics. The Smoke was a disaster but I'll have to live with it. The wheels look too small. I think I'm going to take the chrome off and paint them silver to look more realistic. I also have some touching up to do. I should have it finished tonight. I'll stay far away from Smoke in future!.

The Messerschmidt is almost done. Didn't get any pictures though. I started the BMW Isetta. Progress pics will follow. You have no idea how small these cars are until you pick up another 1/24 kit of 'normal' size car!!

Wow! You're in Joburg. Surprised to see someone from down there posting. Good luck with the Fulvia - fantastic climate to look after those old cars, and some great bodyshops to help out with the painting if you need it.

Where did you get that kit? Esswex? I used to go there when I lived down there, and know they have a load of them in stock, probably a good price too. People who want the kits can probably get them to ship them over too.

Hi BWheel! Where you based now? You are correct, the kit is from Esswex. I got the last one! I can't find them anywhere else. I've taken most of there 'rare' kits so they only have the standard stuff lately. About those body shops here, who do you recommend?
