temperature gauge pegged

Yesterday, the temp gauge on my 93 1.9 pegged hot. So, I felt the hoses and said yup, new themostat. I had changed it just six 6000 miles ago. I got 194,000 on the first one, and only 6K on the next. Anyhow, after changing both the coolant temperature and gauge sending units, my gauge still pegs after a couple of minutes. I grabbed an infared thermometer from work, and read the sending unit housing temp as 174F after a hard 20 mile run. Gauge still pegged on hot. Any suggestions?

So; you're saying that the gauge is pegged on HOT but it's running at normal temperature? (I'm not sure what norm. temp is for these cars). If so; I believe the gauge works because of the sender changing resistance to ground. My suggestion would be to make sure the wire off of the sender isn't grounded anywhere.
