Parts age

I have a 97 Intrepid and I took it into the dealership today and they told me the computer said that the throttle body was bad. I had removed a filler cap over the idle adjuster screw. Since I did this they said they could not work on it. Since they couldn't work on it it had to be replaced (fine) however chrysler no longer makes the part and Autozone, Napa etc don't make it either. Here is my main question isn't there a law saying that auto makers have to provide parts up to 10 years on cars?

Ask that only a factory certified gasoline engine performance specialist work on your car.
Not all dealerships are concerned with how repairs are dispatched, and not all dealership techs bother to take advantage of the training offered by dealer(the vast majority of which is paid training). If the dealer is uncooperative, ask for your money back and call around for a dealer that will accommodate you.

Tips on finding a good repair shop.

Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

Oh I already got my money back thats not the problem. Since I now know what the problem is I can fix it. The thing is I can't get the part. Autozone Napa etc do not offer it I have been search the net all night for a place and I am not having any luck. The strange part is I can find throttle body spacers for performance but not the whole thing. I might get back there this weekend and see if the butter fly is closing all the way and is gued up or something. I just can't believe the part is not available. I could have sworn there was a law saying that they had to provide parts up to 10 years!

I guess I will just have to goto a junk yard.

There used to be laws requiring replacement parts on certain things although I am not sure how long it applied to cars. Seems like it was 5 years for some types of industries. However in this day and age manufacturers can pretty much do what they want. Still I would be surprised to see any car mfr not offering parts as they make a lot of money on them. Might search for other dealers that are online (although it sounds like you have done that already) and places such as Ebay. At some point a manufacturer cannot get the part anymore as many are outsourced both here and abroad and the actual company making the part may go out of business etc. and some parts may not be worth stocking due to cost, sale, and the fact the part is not used in new cars. A 1997 car though is not old and that is alarming. I can get pretty much any part for my son's old 91 Corsica from GM but you pay a hefty price for some of them.
