Lost Keys

I have a 1991 Cavalier, I was wondering if there is a way to start it without having the keys..? I somehow managed to lose them, and know someone who will drill the ignition out, if I can get the car to them. If there was a way to slip it into neutral or driver it would be alright, cause then I could tow it. ((Automatic Transmission.))

Call a tow truck.
It would be easier to break into fort knox then try to start it.
Even if you got it in neutral the wheel is locked and you will have no brakes or ps. And run the risk of towing it and tearing up things.
That is what tow trucks are made for.
And why people take out comp and towing on there insurance.

You might call your dealer and see if they can make a key from the vin no if key cylinder has not been replaced.
Also look in owners manual and glove box for the key knock out pellets or a key pellet no.
A new key can be made from that no.
Or sometimes the origional owner will have a ket for it.
And also some people put a hide out key in in different places on car.
Or one other angle is to get a used steering column from bone yard.

Also if the door lock uses the same key a locksmith can make a key for it if you remove the door lock and take it to him or may have the key no stamped on it.
More ways than one to shin a cat.

We took the VIN number to a Chec dealership and got a set of keys cut, door and ignition. Apparently the ignition on the car must have been changed at some point because the ignition key didn't work, though the door one was fine.

Were thinking of removing the ignition and taking it into a locksmith, seems that it would be cheaper then having to haul it the whole way to the city.. which is a long way when you live in the country.

Is removing an ignition a tricky job? I got some vague instructions about taking off the steering wheel and moving the signal lite switch.. might get it, with some tinkering. :)

To remove the key cylinder you need the key to turn in to the right position.
About the only without the key is to drill inside out of cylinder.
And remove steering wheel and turn signal and get locking pin out plus the crazy buzzer switch.
A good service manual will help you.
If it has a air bag do not try it yourself outside of the drilling out part. which is not covered .

I would just call a locksmith if you can't get a new key made from the VIN. May cost 100 bucks but less aggravation and potentially less money than monkeying with your steering column. :2cents:

You can buy lock cylinders and keys at Autozone...have the option of black or chrome keys, even :P
