rear glass hatch won't stay up in winter - Rodeo 97

Hello All,

The glass hatch on the rear cargo door won't stay up in winter. there are two hydraulic legs that hold the glass up. The glass door starts to slip back down as soon as I pull it up. As the time the weather gets warmer, the problem disappears.

Its gets annoying in the cold when trying to load groceries to have it fall back. I usually put something under one of the legs to have the glass door stay up.

is there anything I can do to make the legs stay up ? are the legs low on hydralic fluid ? if so how i can add more ?

I have the exact same problem on my 97 rodeo. It has happened with age and just seems to be cold weather that will trigger it. Very annoying but propping it up with something takes care of it. I don;t see how you can add anything to them.......appear to be sealed.

Like anything else, they wear out over time.

I've owned my Rodeo for 3 years now and the lift struts on my hatch have always worked fine, until this winter. Now, they will not hold the glass up since the weather has turned cold.

I've seen them at the local auto parts store, so you will be able to replace them without going to the dealer.

The only thing you can do is replace the struts, I'll be doing mine soon.

Same exact issue here.

It's kind of irritating. They work without any problems at 40F and up, but fall right down when it's colder or humid.

They have lasted about 8yrs longer then the one's that I had on my '91 Rodeo - they didn't even last 2yrs.

Eventually, they'll be just like mine and won't hold anything up even in warm weather. :banghead:

that's when you break out the trusty broom handle...cut to fit of course :icon16:

Yeah, I'll have to do something soon - got hit in the head yesterday!

Used to have a 1" round stick cut to fit exact for the old Rodeo, can't find it anymore.

i do know, jcwhitney has these little clip thingys' (yes it's a technical term) that when you open the hatch, you just click inot place on the shocks...when not in use, they just hang around. i'll see if i can find a link... i know it's in the catalog

i went searching for the clips....you know, the window struts aren't that expensive, $13-$30. you might as well do the job right and replace them.

I replaced mine, from the dealer, they were not too expensive, I think 40.00 for the pair. Use your head and stop compaining.
