NP249 and NV249

Hello,
I have JGC 95y. 5,2l Orvis with NP249 transfer case. I'm happy with this transfer case so far but I would like to have a lock. I read here in some posts that transfer case NV249 (96y.-98year) has a lock when in 4WD Low mode. If I want to change NP249 and install NV249 should I expect any seriuos problems ? What abut front drive shaft ? Thanks in advance for any information.

What do you mean by a lock? Are you talking about a differential lock?

Yes

No you should not have any problems, the NV should bolt right up to the tranny. they are they same transfer case, just the internals are a bit different.

Can someone verify if this is true? I knew that when I bought my Jeep it had had a LOT of work done to it, some poor soul had sunk about $5K into the thing in the past year or so. I know the tranny was done and the T-Case is awful shiny as well. Recently when doing brake work I've been underneath and noticed the tag says NV249.

I'm imagining that when work was done they went with the newer T-Case and lucky me?

I was'nt aware of any differences between the nv and np. Only change it signifies is the buy out of the company. As far as the lock differential goes the t-case has nothing to do with it does it? Thats done in the rear axle?

from '96 - '98 the np249 & np 242 both have low locking diffs, previous years do not.

If you have no problem with your current np249 why change it yet? putting in a np242 may requir changing your input because of lenght reasons. They have three different sizes, short medium and long, in which case you can swap the input shaft from your np249 into your np242 if necasary.

I will be swaping out my np 249 for the np242 in a couple of weeks, and I have not done this before myself but when I checked the specs they were the same. I might have a problem with my rear input shaft but will find out if I do when I do the swap.

You are right the Locking diffs has nothing to do with the transfercase, thats just locking each wheel on a single axle together = better traction, exact oposite of an open diff.

Now on the 96-98 quadra-trac transfer cases they do have a lo-lock which locks each axle together when in 4x4 LO. 95 and earlier quadra-tracs do not have a lo-lock..... like RUNMONKEYRUN mentioned.

I feel like I got a freebie without having to do any work. :smokin:

I know everyone wanks on the 249 because of the VC but it would seem if you're going to have one at least the NV is the better of the two.

For normal street 4 wheelin the 249 is great, But because the viscous is not a solid connection it can also slip on really rough terain. And then theres the short life of the viscous. Although I've heard that the newer vc's are a little longer lived. I personally just prefer the 242 for its all around durability and long life span. My 249 had 125k on it. All my previous jeeps with 242's went easily 200+. Good inthe rough and on the street. Thats why I did the 249 to 242 swap last year.

Anyone know the part number of the 4wd transfer switch? I've had it looking at that :banghead: message on the VIC.
