PROBLEM with Cone Air Filter HELP!!!

I removed paper air filter in 2000 lexus rx300. last night added a cone filter in the filter box(rigged withduct tape, hot glue, etc). The rigging came off during a 30 mile trip and black smoke was coming out. Upon home arrival I effectivly rigged filter.

I was very excited as to see how performed. I had a mpg increase 25% @ 55mph and noticably more power. This morn cranked car and lots of smoke came out, and car would not rev over 3k and would idle out. Cold weather had caused filter to seperate.

Bought pvc and Air filter is now mounted inside oem box. However car will just idle out. I have tried pulling a couple fuses and also removing cables to reset maf.

I assume that I might have a bigger problem on my hands, now

my advice, if you can afford a lexus, just take it to a dealership. Youve prolly disconnected a sensor or two. They will rape you in price to fix your mistake, but thats prolly your only option.

Honestly you really dont sound like the type of person who should be modifying a car. If you want an intake, do some research first, and for you, id suggest you have a shop install it.

what color is the smoke?

Blue-oil
Black-rich (gas)
White-water/coolant

If it is black, maybe your MAF sensor is messed up. The ECU could also be used to running rich, but the intake messed w/ the AF ratio by allowing more air in. The smoke could be completely unrelated.....

I took the MAf out and cleaned with pure alcohol. This removed the deposits. Car would idle out much more quickly(3 sec) with Maf removed thus I assume that is still working, however could have been damaged(?) I checked the spark plugs they were badly burnt. Didn't measure gap... was close to 1/16". Obviously not the plug I needed. I talked with a gentleman today who is at the nascar school mooresville ,nc and he said that he thought that the fuel filter could have a problem. This car is due for a check up. I bought recently at an auction and it has close to 100k. I want to do all the upgrades that are worth the money as I will be putting alot of miles on the vehicle and mpg and performance. Any advice as to what upgrades I should consider. Don't mind capital investment as I drove my volvo 850 turbo until 330k miles.

And to the person who made the condescening comment about me having a lexus. It is quite obvious that you have a very nice car and have been kind enough to post beautiful pictures of your car for us to see, thanks. I was able to obtain the lexus at a ridiculus through a car dealing friend. I do not have alot of money and I was trying to do what I could on my budget. I will be buying the future components and taking them to a professional. thanks for the advice

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=459319 most of it applies to fuel injected cars. basically, if you want mpg's and power, make the car breath better and work as efficiently as possible. intake and exhaust are usually the best place to start, it's pretty cheap and easy to install and it still gives you some power. then, if you want to venture that far, you can get higher compression pistons, maybe some higher flowing heads or get them ported and polished, get bigger valves.
after that things start to decrease fuel efficiency. so you could bore out the cylenders, get a stroker kit (it will increase the stroke and thus the engine displacement, don't know if you can find one for your car, also it will give you more torque and lower revs. it might also be too involved for you), you can also go forced induction, turbocharger or supercharger, for info on this do a search in the forced induction forums for supercharger or turbo, or turbo vs supercharger to know more about them.
I think you should start with intake and exhaust and maybe go for a nitrous oxide system. that way you get great mpg's and you only have the nitrous when you want it, it's also the cheapest out of that, turbo, or supercharger, the only thing is that you have to refill the bottle. a 50 or 75hp shot should be good enough.

also you could upgrade you ignition system, cheap, might free up a few ponies and might increase gas mileage.

[figured it out I needed to have smooth flow. i had a 90 angle that was causing turbulence and maf to not read correctly. anyone know where to but air flow tubes 4" and 2.5 "

also what is the best way to clean combustion chamber?

i don't know where you can buy the intake parts, you should probably check your local performance or muffler shop. as for the combustion chamber cleaner, put 1 or 2 oz of acetone (nail polish remover) in your fuel tank when you fill up, just make sure that it doesn't have any fragrances in it. it's also used as paint remover so don't spill any. acetone is a strong solvent so that's why it helps clean the combustion chamber, it dissolves alot of gunk that's in there.

honestly i would just put some STP fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank every time you get an oil change (2000 miles) and that should be all you need to do. I don't know why you would need to clean the combustion chamber, but w/e.....

I have never heard of using acetone. that is some strong stuff would that not damage other parts? I have used that to removing black mammy tar but I guess anyting is woth looking into. How important is that to have a clean combustion chamber? Also where did you guys go to buy books on your specific car engines?

Beef, Gasoline is better at disolving carbons than Acetone (which is better at disolving unburnt hydrocarbons) plus, the unburnt fule is in the combustion chamber for such a short tiem it doesnt really have time to do anything.
