cd player installation

hi,
1999 chevy cavalier
cd player lens was screwed up
need to know how to know what stereos will fit
will i have to change my stock speakers( because some decks say
52V X 4 stuff like that)
how do i remove stock stereo.
how to install new one
am i gonna have to change around or splice wires
what ill need
hope some one can help mee
is there some kind of free video tutorial

ur gonna want it done professionally....mine took about 3 hour....
first you have to remove the front dash (2 hours)....then unscrew and remove the stock CD player.....you might need an adapter for your cd player and if you have a system....then plug it back in and screw the deck into place....then put the front dash back on....most decks should fit....i didnt look at the specs of mine and mine worked (JVC)

It took you 3 hours to replace the radio? Damn what the hell were you doing? I can understand if it was your first time messing with your car though. I guess after you take the dash apart a few times it gets easier. I can probably have a new stereo in in less than an hour.

I have to agree with 01cavy, 3 hours? christ I rip my dash apart in like 20 minutes, you just have to know where stuff is, and read the sticky's in non performance for stereo installation, the only thing that should be proffesional unless you have a friend that can do it is the wiring, and also you don't need to change your speakers just don't crank the volume if they can't handle it

I agree guys,3 hours is way to long.When I did my first one it took me 1 1/2 hours.Now I can do it in 1/2 hour complete install.Back to the subject,You can do this install yourself as long as you have basic knowledge of tools and cars.When my wife bought a cd player to install in her brand new 96 cavy the audio shop wanted $60.00 just to install it(remember that was in 96,probally more now).That wasn't counting the wire harness,mounting kit,antenna adapter.The speakers aren't hard to do either.Everything you need to know can be found here on the forums,hell you even get pictures.Do it yourself and save $$$$.

yeah, i got to do it my self cause i live in nunavut that in canada but way north. YOu see the eskimoes on the discovery channel thats where. so its gonna cost a fortune to get it proffesionally installed. Thanks i saw how to actually put the deck in on that link but i also need to know how to wire it?????AND do i need any kind of special connecters or extension kits, anything extra other than the actual deck. Cant i just use what ever the current cd player is plugged into and just plug that it to the new one.? THANKS :)

lol...well consider this....i had no prior knowledge of my car at all...i had just baught my first cavalier....and i just started ripping the dash apart...then i realized there were screws in places i had not seen....so all together it prob. took me around 3 hours 2 take it off install the cd player and put the dash back on...lol and in the process i cracked and broke off half of my dash so i had to go to a dump and rip one off a new cavalier lol fun times
EDIT: also i didnt know about this forum at the time so i only had 1 friend that knew about decks and he only knew about putting one in a civic

You'll need a wire harness and installation kit. Check out www.crutchfield.com They should have what you need.

You will need a deck,mounting kit,wire harness,red wire connectors & a wire crimper tool,antenna adapter,good ole black tape.The aftermarket wire harness comes with directions on how to wire it to your deck.Take note when you go to plug your aftermarket wire harness plug into the factory harness about the color of the factory wires by matching them up with the aftermarket wire harness directions so you know what colors of wires go where and whether they are positive or negative,this is handy when you want to add speakers.

I'd personally solder then tape the wires, but its up to personal preference I guess.

I said use "red wire connectors"that's the reason for the crimping tool. :screwy:Black tape is for tieing up the wires afterwards.My bag for not realizing that everybody is familier with them.

I wouldn't even go that route...I'd still solder and tape. Like I said its personal preference. I've done it all ways, and was not satisfied with any of them except soldering. Maybe I'm just weird huh? :screwy:

Maybe cause you quoted my reply. :screwy:Soldering is alright but is time consuming,solder then tape or shrink vs crimp and shrink(the wire connector already has the shrink on it). :uhoh:But if that is how you do it then kudos to you. :smile:
