Problem (EXPERTS ONLY PLEASE)

I bought a 94 Trooper LS V6 5speed manual this past June. Since then I have driven the vehicle 10,000 miles.

When I bought the vehicle I learned it had 2 clutch kits put in it within the last 3 years. The mechanic I used recommended buying a $30 hydraulic hose to fix the problem (he inspected the clutch, master and slave cylinder, etc. and they were all fine).

*The problem was that once the vehicle warmed up, which happend about 10 minutes into any drive, it would all of a sudden lose pressure and not accelerate but skyrocket on RPM. I was told the hose was causing the problem.

After he replaced the hose I test drove the vehicle 5,000 miles to Seattle and back with no problems.

About 2 months ago, every now and then, the vehicle would act up (same problem, you'd be driving and all of a sudden the vehicle would lose pressure, not accelerate, and be heavy on RPM).

I ordered another hose and had my mechanic install it, he also suggested bleeding brake fluid and did that too.

I was driving my car the other day and it did the same thing. I was going about 25 mph and was trying to accelerate to 35 and the car had a really hard time getting up there. The RPM shot through the roof!

Could the EGR be playing a role in this by any chance?

Any help would be nice.

94 Trooper LS, 120k, 5speed, 4WD, 3.2l (I think) V6.

No expert here, so I hope you will except my simpleton diagnosis :disappoin . When you say your "vehicle is loosing pressure", I *assume* you are describing a slipping clutch type symptom? How does the clutch pedal feel once the truck is warmed- any change from when it's cold? Either your clutch slave cylinder and associated plumbing is leaking, or your rear main seal is leaking engine oil on to the clutch lining material/ pressure plate area & causing the clutch to slip. Just my (non-expert) guesses.

Non-experts are fine. The slave cylinder, etc. have all been replaced within the last 2 years.

The clutch feels fine. It doesn't feel like any slippage is taking place and it doesnt' feel 'funny' when shifting into different gears.

Just heavy RPM and no acceleration.

Got a second opinion on the vehicle. Was told that the master clutch cylinder has a leak and would need to be replaced.

The master clutch cylinder was replaced in 2003 but seems to have gone bad.

Was told that the clutch was too tight. I'm not sure what I think about this because isn't the 93 a self-adjusting clutch?

the clutch master cylinder pushrod is adjustable. if not enough free play when clutch is warm it very possibly could slip

Okay. Is it likely though that hte master clutch cylinder needs to be replaced? If so, I will have my mechanic adjust the clutch when he install new cylinder next week.

So far I've got about about $1000 tied up in it:

$80 Muffler
$80 Battery
$190 Window
$325 Inspection and Hydraulic Repair
$80 Hydraulic Hose
$30 Misc.
$200 Tune-Up

And next week a new clutch master cylinder.

About $2,000 tied up in vehicle with purchase ($1100) and about 10k on it since June. Hope this clears up the problem.

Ok,
Now I'm not an expert - but I have done my fair share of mechanic work. Now, I have never worked on a 93 trooper, but I belive I can speak from experience on this one. To properly diagnose this, you must first understand how the clutch works. The clutch is always engaged with a large spring on the pressure plate until acted upon by an outside force. When you step on the pedal it pushes on the piston in your master cylinder, which in turn pressurizes the fluid in the line, which in turn extends your slave cylinder, which in turn presses on the throwout bearing, thus disengaging your clutch. Because this is a self adjusting system, there should never be anything pushing on the throwout bearing, unless your slave cylinder is getting stuck in its bore(if this is the case then it is probably leaking badly). There is an adjustment for your pedal on the rod that pushes the master cylinder, but this is not meant to adjust your clutch in any way, just to adjust the highth of the pedal - if you can see the back side of the master cylinder, look for the piston seating on the snap ring inside of the bore and for any leaking brake fluid - if these are both fine - leave that adjustment alone. The only time you should have to replace any part of the hydraulic system is when something is leaking, when this happens you will not be able to disengage the clutch as usual - in other words, if you are at a stop and you go to put the car in gear with the clutch pushed in, the gears will grind, or the car will want to move when you do this. (this will also happen to a system that needs bled) If neither of these are the case then you do not need to replace any of the hydraulic parts. The symtoms you are describing sound exactly like a slipping clutch. I would assume the following: Either you keep getting cheap clutches, you ride the clutch too much, or you have some type of contaminate that keeps getting on the clutch plate to cause this. In any case, I don't think that replacing any hydraulic component is going to fix your specific problem. Good luck
