dusty envioronment please help???

hi guys im returning to modeling after a long break and ive decided to tackle the revell 69 camaro after seeing these forums and the talent here i got motivated to improve my builds ,heres my problem: in my garage theres alot of dust caused by my dad being a carpenter by trade ,i went to lay down the base on the body but got alot of dust on it even after laying a box over it ,is it ok to sand the dust out of the paint or is there a better solution ,its so frustrating ive already stripped the paint so im ready to have another go sorry for the long post any help is much appreciated.....thanks

For Catrol Super Clean replacement, you're looking for any biodegradable automotive degreaser/cleaner. You're local auto parts store should have something that will work. It will likely come in a spray bottle.

And yes, you can certainly sand dust out of paint.

thanks mpwr,the problem with sanding is the last coat i guess if you get dust in it then your screwed lol,i know csc is the popular choice to strip paint and easiest,ive got elo (easy lift off) and it takes a while to remove it with a brush

Many people sand out and polish their paint after the final layer has cured. This will deal with any dust contamination on the last coat, and make the surface even and shiney.

For stripping paint, often the fastest ways are not the best ways. A couple of days to strip a body is really no big deal. It's much better to do it slowly, but not risk ruining the body. It also helps to encourage you to use stripping as a last resort (which it is), and work with the paint you've already applied- which is how you'll really learn the skills of body painting.

thanks again mpwr ,if i do have to sand the final coat what grade should i be using ?and wet is the better option ?yes,ill post pics up of some other cars ive done and hopefully this one down the track thanks again

2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper is good for final sanding. its easy to find at auto parts stores. 2500 or 3000+ is better but harder to find. also this is a note: DO NOT sand the final coat of paint if it is a metallic or pearl color. for metallic colors you need to add a clear coat before sanding or it will ruin the look. but you can sand solid colors.

thanks freakmech,ive got some 2000 already so thats cool ,i just wish i had a better envioronment to paint in OHWELL....,everythings in primer so ill get the base on soon and let you all know how it goes,the final colour is a tamiya metallic so thanks for the tip ill wait for the clear before sanding,one last thing should i sand betwwen coats for dust or all at once at the end??????

if needed you should sand between coats but if you are getting even and fairly smooth coats then there is no need to sand. also they make air cleaners for work shops that you could put in the garage if the dust is really bad. tell your mom that the dust is bad for your dad so she will go buy one. haha

Also, what type of box did you cover your model with?

Boxes in general are notorious for hoarding dust. Best to get a nice clean plastic container . . .

well since you are in austrailia, you should be having some rather nice weather right now, right? so why not paint outside on a calm day, then plop the body down into a big tupperware container and let it dry in that? or you could build yourself a spray booth with a clear window and two holes to put your hands through. use some latex sheet with a small hole punched in it to cover the "hand holes" to keep dust from entering through there. and have the ends open with some old t-shirts with a fresh application of hair spray to keep dust from entering while having excellent ventillation.

haha, I say "JUST" it takes time and a little enginuity to get a good booth, but it's worth it if you build alot of models.
