Hello,
I took my '00 Passat 4Motion wagon with 96K miles in for the (delayed) 80K service. It'd been running flawlessly. Driving away from the dealer, I noticed that it was chugging/misfiring at low RPM's, when idling at a stop sign for instance. It did the same thing when accelerating. I called the dealer, and took the car straight back. The next day, they called to say they didn't notice the problem. I picked up the car for a trip I needed to take. The misfiring continued, and then the emissions workshop/check engine light came on. It did this multiple times, notably when passing on the freeway. (I was in the middle of nowhere when this happened, and have a nice ulcer as a result) The light is now on full time, I've yet to take the vehicle back into the dealer. I'm consulting the gurus here first so I'll have some sort of knowledge.
Thanks in advance!
Patrick

If the light is on you have got a problem.
Tip on going to the dealer
Ask that only a factory certified gasoline engine performance specialist work on your car.
Not all dealerships are concerned with how repairs are dispatched, and not all dealership techs bother to take advantage of the training offered by Factory (the vast majority of which is paid training). If the dealer is uncooperative, ask for your money back and call around for a dealer that will accommodate you. :grinno: :lol2:

Well it's at the dealer now. Naturally, it only misfired once the whole way there. :banghead: I described everything as best as I could. I've got a loaner in the meantime. Oh yeah, it started smoking on the way there too. Beautiful.

Patrick,
I have the sedan version and have had the same problems.
The emissions light was due to the catalytic converter and the misfiring was caused by bad spark plug and spark plug wires. I had bouht my car at Carmax and they replaced the spark plugs and wires for free (the wires cost about $300 any automotive parts store) but they wanted to charge about $6000 for the catalytic converter. I had my local mechanic do it but it was still about $800. Good luck.
