Highbeam problems

2002 Buick Century. The highbeams go out completly. If I switch to lowbeams they stay on. Switch back to highbeams & they may stay on for a while but in time will go out again. This problem started about a yr. ago & only happened a few times. Now it is becoming a real problem. Any ideas on the fix?

Sounds like the multi-function dimmer switch has flaky contacts. Since low beams work it is just the contacts of the switch for the high beams. Removal of the plastic covers on the steering column will be required for further inspection or replacement.

I got the procedure for r&r of dimmer switch from a Buick dealer. It says the steering wheel needs removed to remove the dimmer switch. I am planning on doing that today & trying to spray a little contact cleaner on the switch to see if that makes a difference before I buy the dimmer switch which is quite pricey. Prices vary depending on the brand from 218.00 to 369.00. Autozone shows one a Wells brand for 218.00. Napa shows a Echlin for 324.49 Advanced Auto shows GP Sorensen for 218.00 a Niehoff for 369.00 a Standard Motor Products for 277.00. Any suggestions on the one to buy. They all have the wiper controls & cruise control.

Here is a multi-function switch replacement procedure for a Regal which should be similar for a Century. I don't think it is necessary to remove the steering wheel. However, you might review this procedure and compare it against the one the dealer gave you. Also exercise caution due to the air bag. Important to remove the battery negative before starting work and/or airbag fuse. I've had good luck with the GP Sorensen switches. Doesn't hurt to tear it apart first and see if the contact cleaner will help. Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I was able to get to the dimmer switch without removing the steering wheel. I removed the switch & sprayed contact cleaner in it & replaced, leaving the covers off. I will see if that helped. It may take a while since the problem was sporadic.

Well, it's been almost a month & lights haven't went out again. Switch doesn't always click when pulling back but a second pull usually works. I put the covers back on so I guess all's well!
