Alright, I think this would be better asked in about three other forums, but I think you guys would best be able to help.
A guy at work tonight over heard me and Steve talking about our race we had, and jumps in on it. We talk for a bit, and talk about plans we have for cars. (Little Side Note: I'm gonna get together with the guy that handles all the money shit for my 'rents cars, and settle the situation with my 325i, sell it, and go for a boosted M3. Its no longer speculation, its a set deal). Anyways, I reveal my little M3 plan, and the guy says that even with a turbo, his car would beat it.
I asked what he has and he said he had a 88 Celica with a motor swap. I ask what motor, and he said he had a motor from a turbo MR2. At first, I was like...um, ok, whatever, then he said it was all wheel drive. After a bit of discussing, we think that it is probable, but why would you want to go that route. So we start asking questions about it, and me and Steve are thinking, well, I guess with enough work you could get the drive train outa a Celica All Trac, drop in the motor, and with enough fabrication, your golden. But no, it gets better.
He claims that he used the drive train/tranny from a WRX. I asked, like, Subaru, and he said yep, subaru WRX drive train. At this point, my mind is kinda blow out because Im thinking of the fabrication needed to go from a new Subaru to an 88 Toyota and not use a H4 motor, but the I4. So I kinda let it go at this point, and point out that if his car really does have that 230hp that he claims, I doubt it would be runnin' with a 350+hp M3.
But regardless of that argument, is it really a plausible idea? I mean, he said he spent 7000 on it after getting the car, but that includes (his words) 5k for the motor, turbo (doesn't know the turbo, said it came in a seperate box?) and tranny+drive train parts. Is it really plausible to use a Subaru drivetrain+MR2 Motor+Celica body?

Thats what I was thinking this entire time. I mean, for the amount it would cost, why not just get a Celica All-Trac, I mean, ya, they are rare, but still. I've been thinking hes rice the entire time, and he says hes gonna bring his car in next time he works, and me and Steve are gonna stick our heads underneath it and in the engine bay, so we'll see.

The AWD Celica All-Tracs had 3SGTE motor - basically the same as the MR2 ones - so that is feasible, but I HIGHLY doubt the WRX tranny, although the car is AWD, so it is also feasible that Subaru AWD limited-slips, and such were modified for this car.

Not to mention the 3SGTE engine is mounted transversely in the engine bay in both the Celica and MR2.
The Subaru motors are mounted longitudinally...

He didn't show up with it, go fig. I called him out on it, and hes like, well, next time you come around, I'll have it for ya. We'll see. Red made the same point I did, about the motor being mounted differently.
And yes, Elchico, once I get the M3, and get it boosted (gonnabe at least a full year thing, gotta get the M3 first, then boost it, might not all happen at once, but it is the direction I am set to go), I think we will be able to shut up lane_change...

The Celica was MADE by Toyota with the 3SGTE engine (turbo MR2 engine) and AWD. In fact, the Celica had the engine first (1988).
Regardless, the car is a pig. They are uber-heavy.
The only advantage the car would have in a race is that it is AWD and most monkeys should be able to launch it well given enough bananas.

So he swaped in the motor that he already had pretty much? And it was an 88...
